BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In a battle of top State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) squads, The College at Brockport men's basketball team approached Friday night's game against a first place Oswego State team with a little extra drive. The Golden Eagles dropped their second loss of the season to the Lakers by a score of 85-69.
The Green and Gold overall record now sits at 14-10, while sitting in third place with a 10-7 conference mark. Oswego moves to 19-5 on the season and 14-3 in SUNYAC competition.
The two teams traded points back and forth to start, each finding opportunities from a number of different players. The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start offensively, as they trailed the Lakers for much of the first half.
Danny Ashley and
Antonio Alvarez opened things up for the Green and Gold, adding strong points both from in the paint and from the perimeter. Finding themselves down seven with 13 minutes left to play,
Jahidi Wallace commanded the paint netting three strong boards to close the Golden Eagles within five. After a strong run from the Lakers, allowing them to grab the largest lead of the half,
Justin Summers and
Chris Atkinson tag teamed for 13 points in an effort to close the gap. Despite a continued strong offensive effort, the Green and Gold trailed the Lakers 50-34 at the half.
The Golden Eagles moved to take things back to start the second, grabbing the first points of the half with points from Summers followed by a pair of baskets from freshman
Danny Ashley. The offense struggled to move out of a double-digit deficit, as untimely fouls allowed the Lakers to maintain their lead. Brockport had four players finish with double digit points, led by Ashley with 12, while Summers knocked down 11 and Alvarez and Atkinson scored 10. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the team fell by a final of 85-69.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. when they host SUNY Cortland. The Green and Gold will honor the senior members of the team in a ceremony held prior to the contest.
