KEAN, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team lost an offensive battle against Kean University, 13-9, in the first game of the regular season. The unit was down big early, after the opposition went up 8-1 in the second inning. Despite a valiant effort by The Golden Eagles, they could not do enough to overcome the Cougars. The Green and Gold drop to 0-1, while Kean moves to 3-0.
Anthony Eaton put Brockport on the board first with a single down the left field line that scored
Lou Miceli, grabbing the lead 1-0. The opponents put up eight unanswered runs between the first and second inning, but the Golden Eagles were a resilient team. The comeback began with Eaton reaching first on a strike three wild-pitch, before
Nik Malachowski and
Justin Valentino worked walks to load the bases.
Daniel DelGaizo took advantage of the opportunity and doubled down the left field line and scored Malachowski and Eaton to cut the deficit to five. After a fielding error on a
Nicholas Pastore hard hit ball brought in Valentino,
Tom Kretzler singled to right field and scored DelGaizo to bring the score to 8-5. A Miceli sacrifice fly finished off the fourth inning scoring after Pastore tagged up and crossed the plate.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Brockport offense kicked it into gear in the sixth. Pastore and Kretzler worked the count to earn walks.
Liam O'Leary recorded his first RBI with a single to left center and it brought Pastore around to score. Eaton backed that up with a two RBI double that gave the team a 9-8 lead. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold could not hold the lead and dropped the battled 13-9.
Eaton was impressive, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one walk and one run scored. Pastore, Kretzler, Miceli, O'Leary and DelGaizo all recorded their first RBI of the season.
Matthew Colucci was a bright spot on the mound today, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one.
