OSWEGO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team took on Oswego State on Saturday in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship. After 40 minutes of intense battling and back-and-forth basketball, the Golden Eagles came up just short in the finale, losing to the Lakers 55-50.
The Green and Gold likely end their season with a 17-11 mark on the year while Oswego punches their ticket to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, advancing with a record of 22-5.
Danny Ashley came out firing, scoring eight of the team's first 11 points as they claimed an 11-2 advantage in the opening five minutes of play. The Green and Gold held onto the lead the entirety of the first half despite a good effort from the Lakers. The advantage got to as many as ten points, when
Jahidi Wallace made back-to-back layups before a
Chris Atkinson three pushed the score to 22-10. The final 2:30 saw nothing go into the basket and Brockport held a 31-25 lead at halftime.
The Golden Eagles maintained a lead for the first ten minutes of the second frame, using buckets from
Devante Hagins and
Montgomery Stroman to keep the Lakers at bay. However, the opposition was patient and eventually claimed a lead at the 9:12 mark. Oswego tried to open the game up, but timely three-pointers by Ashley and Atkinson were clutch down the stretch, hitting shots from behind the arc to stifle any opposition run. Despite a tremendous effort by Brockport, they were unable to convert in the final seconds and fell by a score of 55-50.
The Green and Gold will await the decision of the NCAA selection committee on Monday, Feb. 25 during the selection show to see if they will earn an at large bid to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.
