GENESEO, N.Y. - The College at Brockport Women's basketball team was on the road Saturday to face off against SUNYAC opponent Geneseo for the first of back to back matchups. After a competitive first half, Geneseo used a 20-2 run in the third to pull away for the remainder of the contest, securing the Knights a 68-49 win. The Golden Eagles move to 8-14 on the season and 6-9 in conference play.
The Golden Eagle offense was ignited by
Zaria McCullough as she hit a deep two-point jumper to start the game. Buckets from
Allison Chiera and
Emily Nestler then gave Brockport an early 6-2 lead. A tough Geneseo full court press gave Brockport's offense a run however, resulting in seven first quarter turnovers that led to several successful fast break opportunities for the opposition. Two three-point jump shots from
Julianna Taylor helped keep the first quarter close with the score resulting in an 18-12 lead in the Knight's favor.
The Green and Gold's second quarter was highlighted by the offensive effort of Taylor and Nestler. The two combined for all 13 of the team's points as Nestler had five and Taylor had eight, including splashing two more from three to put her at a perfect 4-4 from downtown. Rebounding and turnovers continued to be a problem for the Golden Eagles, allowing the Knights to secure a larger lead heading into halftime, 36-25.
With a deficit ahead, the Golden Eagles powered through in order to generate a comeback offensive movement. The offense provided good looks however, the shots simply were not falling as Brockport could only accumulate five total third quarter points resulting in a 56-30 deficit after three.
Morgan Elmer got the lid off the basket in the fourth by hitting a long jump shot on a nice assist from McCullough. Chiera,
Nicole Leslie, and
Heidi Miller helped the offense find their rhythm, allowing them to outscore the Knights 19-14 in the fourth, but it was not enough for Brockport to close the gap, ultimately resulting in a win for the Knights.
Brockport was led by Taylor who finished the afternoon with 17 points, completing five of six from the perimeter and two assists. Nestler also had a strong outing, scoring 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
The Golden Eagles are back in action Tuesday where they welcome Geneseo at home, looking to pick up a split against the Knights. The two are scheduled to matchup at 5:30 p.m.
