FORT MEYERS, FLA. – Despite struggling to find their rhythm against the Curry College Colonels in their opening game of spring training, the College at Brockport softball team rounded out the day with a strong win over the Western Connecticut State Colonials.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles start the 2019 season with an even 1-1 record.
- With the win, Curry College moves to an even 5-5 while WCSU Colonials' loss drops them to 7-5 overall.
- All three teams split on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles struggled defensively on the mound to start, relying heavily on the power of their bats to turn the tides.
- With back to back walks from Meghan Cullen and Casey Danko and only one out, Jessica Koneski put the Green and Gold on the board with a single to center.
- Kacie Hubbard then rose to the occasion, adding two more RBI with a line drive up the middle to score Koneski and Danko.
- In another attempt to dig themselves out of a hole, the Golden Eagles went to bat with the same goal in mind in the second.
- Danko doubled to right field to score Cullen who had reached on an error, moving the score to 12-4 to start the third.
- Freshman Megan Van Dorn then stalled the Colonels offense on the mound, allowing the Green and Gold to pick up two unanswered runs in the third.
- Allison Missavage was the next to command the batter's box, launching a double down the left field line. Morgan Flamholtz then capitalized on a runner in scoring position, placing one in right field to score Missavage.
- Building off the momentum, Alexis Ross ball to the mound forced the pitcher to move out of her comfort zone, forcing an error, in turn scoring Molly Ryan who was pinch running for Flamholtz.
- The Golden Eagles remained scoreless through the next two, allowing the Colonels to pick up enough runs to secure a 16-6 lead after five innings.
Game 2
- Danko opened up the scoring for the Golden Eagles in her first at bat, nailing a deep two-run homerun over the center field fence to put the Green and Gold up 2-0 at the end of the first.
- After a strong second inning from freshman pitcher Cheyenne Wilson, Flamholtz was able to kick start another strong cycle for the Golden Eagles, leading off with a single to left field.
- Tori Thuman, Lexi Abernathy, and Ross subsequently added consecutive hard ground balls, putting immense pressure on the Colonials Defense.
- Ross' line drive to third base forced an error that secured second and third for the Green and Gold, allowing Abernathy to then score on a pass ball pushing them to a 3-0 lead.
- With the Colonials now on the board, the Golden Eagles aimed to move momentum back in their favor. Danko led off the third with a single to center field, followed by a walk from Koneski.
- Flamholtz then buckled down with two outs, nailing a strong line-drive to left field to score Sarah Mahar who pinch ran for Koneski.
- Abernathy and Ross found themselves in key scoring positions again, setting up Missavage to pick up two RBI on a single to center, moving the score to 6-1 to end the fourth.
- Wilson led the Golden Eagles to victory on the mound through through the next two innings, securing a 6-2 win.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Koneski had the hot hands in game one, putting the ball in play in two of her three at bats while adding a run and an RBI.
- Hubbard, Danko and Cullen backed her up, Hubbard adding two RBI, Danko adding a run and an RBI, and Cullen adding two runs.
Game 2
- Wilson only allowed four hits and two runs in her 25 at bats faced while striking out two.
- Danko, Flamholtz and Missavage led the offensive movement for the Green and Gold. Danko finished the day 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI, and a two-run homerun, followed by Missavage who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Flamholtz who executed 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- The Golden Eagles also saw strong execution on the bases from Abernathy and Ross, who collectively accounted for three runs.

- The Golden Eagles are set to face off against Crown College tomorrow at 9 a.m. followed by the University of Pitt-Bradford at 11 a.m.
