FORT MEYERS, FLA. – The College at Brockport softball team attacked day two of spring training with a vengeance, battling their way to back to back victories against Crown College and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles start improve to a 3-1 record.
- Both Crown and Pitt-Bradford picked up a pair of losses on the day, falling to 3-5 and 5-7 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles commanded the game from their first at bat, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- Alexis Ross started the momentum, with a hard single to center field. Meghan Cullen and Casey Danko followed with a pair of singles to third base, loading the bases for Jessica Koneski.
- Koneski continued the trend, nailing one down the third base line to score Cullen and Ross for the first two runs of the game.
- After a walk from Alison Missavage to load the bases again, Aren Schwab stepped up to the plate and singled to left center, scoring Danko.
- The consistency of the Golden Eagles offense kept the Storm on their toes, opening an opportunity for Machala Andrews. Andrews hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman, forcing an error off her glove to score Koneski and Missavage.
- Kacie Hubbard added another to the board in the bottom of the second with a single to left field to score Koneski from second.
- Sophomore pitcher Julia Palopoli was lights out, holding the Storm scoreless through five.
- Palopoli only gave up three runs in 29 at bats to secure the win for the Green and Gold 6-3.
Game 2
- The offense was still dominant in the second game however more consistent throughout the entire game.
- Both teams battled for runs, remaining scoreless through the first two innings.
- The Golden Eagles caught fire in the third inning with a lead off single by Lexi Abernathy. Danko then nailed a double to left field, scoring Abernathy and Cullen to put them up 2-0.
- Freshman Cheyenne Wilson continued to control the pace of the game, holding the Panthers off offensively until the fifth inning.
- Ross continue her hot streak from game one, singled to center field scoring Cami Duggan. Danko then forced another error by the right fielder consequently scoring Ross and Abernathy.
- The sixth inning proved to be one of their strongest yet, adding four hits for four runs.
- Cullen led things off with a solo homerun over the center field fence, sparking a fire in the offense.
- Danko and Koneski added consecutive singles to left, allowing Danko to then score off of Morgan Flamholtz's double to left.
- Schwab, pinch running for Koneski, then scored on a pass ball and Flamholtz moved to third with only one out.
- Catcher Molly Ryan then added an RBI of her own, with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Flamholtz.
- The sixth inning opened up the gap to nine, moving the score to 10-1.
- Even though things got dicey in the seventh and the Panthers moved themselves within two, relief pitcher Megan Van Dorn held them off long enough to secure the win.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Schwab and Koneski lead the Golden Eagles offensively, Schwab going a perfect 3-for-3 at bat with an RBI and Koneski batting .500 with two runs and two RBI.
- Ross, Cullen and Danko each added a run while Andrews and Hubbard were clutch on the assist, Andrews with two RBI and Hubbard with one.
Game 2
- The Golden Eagles finished with 13 total hits against the Panthers.
- Danko and Abernathy both finished the day batting .750 while collectively adding three runs and five RBI.
- Cullen added two runs as well, followed by Ross, Danko, Schwab, Flamholtz, Ryan and Duggan each adding a run of their own.
UP NEXT –
- The Golden Eagles are set to face off against North Central College at 9 a.m. followed by another matchup with Crown College at 11 a.m.
