FORT MEYERS, FLA. – After a rainout on Tuesday, the College at Brockport softball went head to head with the University of Minnesota Morris and Crown College for their final day of spring training before heading home.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles split on the final day of spring training, sending them back to Brockport with an overall record of 7-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles picked up a loss to Minnesota Morris in a close 3-2 matchup.
- Both teams battled to put runs on the board, remaining scoreless through the first two innings.
- The Cougars took the lead in the third after back to back shots to the outfield then holding the Green and Gold to no points until the bottom of the sixth.
- Meghan Cullen hit a double to left center with one out, putting her in scoring position with Casey Danko at the plate.
- Danko flew out to right field advancing Cullen to third, setting up Jessica Koneski to put the Golden Eagles on the board.
- Koneski then hit a two-run homerun to left center, closing the gap to one.
- The Golden Eagles rallied to move ahead in the seventh but couldn't execute quick enough to secure the win, picking up their third loss of the week.
Game 2
- The second game started very similarly to the first, as the battle of the pitching staffs held both teams scoreless through the first three innings.
- The Golden Eagles opened things up in the top of the fourth with Cullen leading off the inning with a double to left.
- Alison Missavage followed with a single to center scoring Cullen to put the Green and Gold up 1-0.
- The Storm then tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth and the score would remain that way until the top of the 7th,
- Lexi Abernathy started things off with a walk, followed by a hard single to left center from Alexis Ross.
- With runners on first and second, Cullen nailed another single to left center, scoring both Abernathy and Ross, allowing the Green and Gold to take the lead, 3-1.
- The Storm were able to add a run in the bottom of the seventh but Julia Palopoli was able to fight her way out of a bases loaded, one out situation to hold onto the lead.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Cullen and Koneski led the Golden Eagles offense, Cullen going 1-for-3 with a run and Koneski going 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
Game 2
- In nine hits, Palopoli only managed to give up two runs while striking out one.
- Ross, Cullen, Missavage, and Abernathy led the Golden Eagles offensive movement.
- Cullen notched a 3-for-4 appearance at the plate with a run and two RBI followed closely by Ross with two hits in four at bats and a run.
- Missavage and Abernathy both went 1-for-2, with Abernathy recording a run as well.
- Cullen caps off the week leading the Golden Eagles offensively with an overall .472 average in 36 at bats while recording 15 runs, 17 hits, three doubles, a homerun and seven RBI.
UP NEXT –
- The Golden Eagles take their efforts back to Brockport where they are expected to host Nazareth College for a double header at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
