NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team traveled to SUNY New Paltz Saturday afternoon for their first conference matchup of the season. The Golden Eagles were eager to get to work after a successful stint during spring break.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- With a pair of losses to the Hawks, the Golden Eagles move to 7-5 overall on the season and 0-2 to start SUNYAC play.
- The Hawks improve to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- Meghan Cullen has proven to be an invaluable asset at the plate for the Golden Eagles, leading the offensive movement in the top of the first with a double to center field.
- With a runner in scoring position, Casey Danko continued the trend with a single to left, leaving a second and third situation with Jessica Koneski at the plate.
- Koneski's powerful bat has been essential in the four spot. The junior captain opened things up with a base-clearing double to center, giving the Green and Gold an early 2-0 lead.
- Julia Palopoli commanded the mound through the first five innings, supplementing for the lull in offense, allowing the Golden Eagles to maintain their lead.
- With the four, five, six spots up to lead off the sixth, Koneski capitalized on her second hit of the day with a single to shortstop. Mandi Lucas would go in to pinch run, allowing for a little extra speed on the base path.
- Alison Missavage and Kacie Hubbard followed with a pair of hard grounders, moving Lucas to third with two outs.
- Coach Dumaw with an opportunity to collect more runs, called to senior Morgan Flamholtz to pinch hit for Lexi Abernathy.
- Flamholtz zoned in and nailed an RBI single to center field scoring Lucas to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
- Palopoli struggled to maintain her dominance in the bottom of the sixth, allowing the Hawks to pick up a run. Freshman Cheyenne Wilson would come in with bases loaded to close out the inning, also allowing a run to move the score within one.
- The Hawks picked up a third run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings where they would then secure the win, 4-3.
Game 2
- The Hawks were the ones to put quick runs on the board in the second game as they strung together a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
- Cullen started the streak for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth with a single to right field. Danko followed suit, hitting a shot to center field to put the Green and Gold in a first and third situation.
- After her strong performance in game one, Koneski came in to pinch hit for Machala Andrews. The junior picked up a key RBI with her grounder to second which allowed Cullen to advance home.
- Freshman Cami Duggan continued to put runs on the board with a single to left field to score Danko.
- The Golden Eagles couldn't capitalize on opportunities offensively for the next two innings, allowing the Hawks to take the lead again.
- Duggan would once again give the Green and Gold a fighting chance in the top of the seventh, starting off the inning with a single to left field. Flamholtz was then hit by a pitch putting the Golden Eagles in good scoring position with no outs.
- A single to center by Abernathy then moved the team to a bases loaded situation with one out.
- Alexis Ross capitalized on the bases loaded situation, placing a shot in the left field gap, scoring Duggan.
- Now stringing things together, Cullen hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Mahar to score on the throw.
- Despite a strong effort in the final inning, the Golden Eagles couldn't put together enough runs to secure the win, falling to the Hawks 7-4.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Koneski led the Green and Gold offense, posting two hits in her four at bats while adding two RBI.
- Flamholtz would finish not far behind, completing 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Danko and Cullen also put up solo shots, both resulting in runs for the Golden Eagles.
Game 2
- Duggan put up the strongest performance for the Golden Eagles, executing in both her plate appearances while adding a run and an RBI.
- Ross, Danko, and Cullen collectively accounted for three hits, two runs, and two RBI.

- The Golden Eagles welcome D'Youville College to the Clark V. Whited Complex Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 3 & 5 p.m. for their first home double header of the season.
