BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team had their home opener on Friday where they hosted a doubleheader against SUNY Plattsburgh. The Green and Gold dropped both game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup, 5-3 and 4-3 respectively.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles now hold a record of 7-12 and 2-6 in conference play
- The Cardinals improve to 4-11 on their season and 2-6 in SUNYAC competition
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game One: Loss, 5-3
- The Golden Eagles kicked off the scoring in the third inning when a Plattsburgh throwing error brought Tommy Kretzler to third and Nicholas Pastore home for the first run of the game
- Liam O'Leary then hit a single bringing in Kretzler to expand the lead to 2-0.
- A defensive battle kept the score 2-0 in Brockport's favor until Plattsburgh scored four runs in the seventh making it 4-2.
- The ninth saw the Green and Gold down 5-2 until the offense led to a run on a bases loaded walk by Ryan Mansell.
- After having the bases loaded with no outs, the Golden Eagles could not bring any more runs in falling by a score of 5-3.
Game Two: Loss 4-3 (8 inn.)
- Mansell singled in the third inning to bring home Josh Cosgrove to put the Green and Gold ahead 1-0.
- Pastore and Kretzler both hit singles in the fifth and were brought in on a Lou Miceli double pushing the lead to 3-1.
- A seventh inning rally by the Cardinals tied the game at 3 apiece and led to extra innings.
- The Golden Eagle offense could not find its stride as Plattsburgh won in the eighth, 4-3.
KEY GAME STATISTICS –
- Kretzler had two hits on the day, and scored two runs as well.
- Miceli finished the day with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
- Trevor McCarthy went the distance in the second game striking out seven batters and only walking one despite picking up the loss.
- Alex Brown was effective in his start, tossing 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out five and allowing just five hits
UP NEXT –
- Brockport will look to rebound against SUNY Plattsburgh for a third game on Saturday, March 30. The first pitch will be thrown at 11 a.m.
