Softball drops two non-conference losses to Nazareth College

BROCKPORT, N.Y. –  The College at Brockport softball team lost two tough non-conference matchups to Nazareth College on Wednesday afternoon and are looking to turn things around this weekend headed into an important conference weekend.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
  • The pair of losses puts the Golden Eagles at an even 10-10 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED –

Game 1

  • The Golden Eagles and Golden Flyers proved to be pretty evenly matched, trading scores back and forth for much of the game one.
  • Megan Van Dorn opened things up on the mound, giving up only a solo hit in the top of the first.
  • The Green and Gold went right to work in their first at bat, finding quick base runners in Alexis Ross and Meghan Cullen.
  • Ross led off the inning with a single to left field followed by Cullen's hard-hit double to left center.
  • With runners on second and third and no outs, Casey Danko made her statement with a long shot over the left field fence, giving the Golden Eagles an early 3-0 lead.
  • Even though the Golden Flyers answered back with two runs of their own in the second, the Green and Gold made up for their losses shortly after.
  • Tori Thuman started the second round of scoring, nailing a double to right center and later advancing to third on Ross's ground-out to the pitcher.
  • The Golden Eagles picked up their fourth run of the afternoon in the proceeding at bat, as Cullen grounded out to second base, picking up an RBI off Thuman.
  • Continuing to play tag with runs, the Golden Flyers followed up with four runs, giving them a two-run lead heading into the fourth.
  • This time Kacie Hubbard got the ball rolling with a double to the right center fence. Aren Schwab then moved Hubbard to scoring position with a single to right field.
  • With Cami Duggan now in to pinch run for Hubbard, Ross laid down a bunt forcing the Nazareth defense to make a decision, however weren't quick enough to catch Duggan before she crossed home plate, moving the Green and Gold back within one.
  • Cullen forced more hard decisions with a line drive to the short stop, allowing the junior to pick up an RBI off Schwab.
  • Once again Danko would give the Golden Eagles the go-ahead as the junior sank a single into shallow left, scoring Ross.
  • Unfortunately, despite a consistent fighting effort, the Green and Gold weren't able to hold on to their lead, giving up two runs to Nazareth in the fifth and sixth inning, securing the Golden Flyers a 9-7 win.

Game 2

  • The Golden Eagles struggled to produce offensive opportunities in game two, only putting up one run and amassing seven hits throughout the game.
  • The team's recorded their first three hits of the game in the bottom of the fourth, where solo shots by Jessica Koneski, Alison Missavage and Morgan Flamholtz almost opened the door for scoring.
  • Julia Palopoli was having a strong outing on the mound heading into the fifth, but was injured on a hard line drive to the mound, leaving the Green and Gold to rely on Cheyenne Wilson and Leah Graham to finish things out.
  • Lexi Abernathy started a rally in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Golden Eagles their first base runner of the inning with a single to left.
  • After advancing on a pass ball, Abernathy found her way to third after a single through the left side by Ross. Cullen walked in the following at bat, giving the Green and Gold a bases loaded situation with one out.
  • Machala Andrews gave the Golden Eagles a fighting chance with two outs with a single to left, scoring Abernathy to put them on the board.
  • However, Andrews hit wasn't enough to rally the troops as the Green and Gold dropped game two, 6-1.
