BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport welcomed conference opponent SUNY Oswego to the Clark V. Whited Complex Saturday afternoon for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) double-header. The Golden Eagles game was also used as the final day of their fundraising event for the Susan G. Komen foundation, where they raised over $1,000 throughout the week for breast cancer research and awareness.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles recorded a split with the Oswego State Lakers, just falling short 12-10 in game one, and pulling out a win in game two, 8-5.
- The split moves the Green and Gold to an even 11-11 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.
- The Lakers' record now sits at 8-16 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles found themselves with a quick deficit in game one, allowing the Lakers to pick up three earned runs in their first round of at-bats.
- The Lakers moved their lead to four in the top of the second, however this time the Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own.
- Alison Missavage led off the inning with a single to third base followed by a single to right center by Morgan Flamholtz.
- Kacie Hubbard switched places with Flamholtz after winning first base on a fielder's choice. Aren Schwab then put the ball in play hard, forcing an error by the third baseman giving the Green and Gold a bases loaded situation with one out.
- Tori Thuman would pick up the first RBI of the game with a single to second base, allowing Missavage to cross home plate.
- The Golden Eagles and the Lakers battled back and forth in the third inning as well, the Lakers putting up two and the Golden Eagles one.
- This time Meghan Cullen opened things up with a double through the right side. Jessica Koneski then drove a double to left center scoring Cullen from second.
- After a quick offensive hiatus in the fourth, the Green and Gold put their bats to work in the bottom of the fifth.
- Koneski put one over the left field fence to lead off the inning, closing the gap to four.
- Missavage and Machala Andrews followed with a pair of walks and an advance on a passed ball, giving the Golden Eagles a first-and-third situation with Hubbard up at the plate.
- Hubbard put up the second run of the inning with a single up the middle, scoring Missavage (her second run of the day).
- The final run of the inning came from Alexis Ross with a hard double to left field, this time scoring Hubbard.
- Even though the Golden Eagles trailed 11-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, they still went to work at the plate.
- A combination of forced errors and crafty base running allowed the Green and Gold to pick up two runs on Missavage and Cullen.
- The Golden Eagles made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Mandi Lucas gave the team their first base runner of the inning on a walk. The freshman then quickly found her way to third on a single to shortstop by Cullen.
- Danko added a single of her own scoring Lucas, giving the Golden Eagles two runners in scoring position with two outs and Koneski up to bat.
- Koneski's power at the plate continued with a double to center field, picking up two RBI to move the score within two.
- Despite a strong comeback, the Green and Gold couldn't produce any more runs, falling to the Lakers 12-10.
Game 2
- Both teams were evenly matched in game two, both putting up solo runs in the first and third innings.
- Missavage gave the Golden Eagles their first run in the first with a hard-hit single to the shortstop scoring Cullen.
- Both teams added their next runs on solo home runs.
- Koneski put up her second home run of the day in the bottom of the third, tying the score at two.
- The Golden Eagles broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth where they notched six runs on four hits.
- Ross opened up the scoring frenzy with a single to left field followed by a double through the left side by Cullen.
- The Green and Gold then had a bases loaded situation with one out after a walk from Koneski.
- Missavage picked up an RBI on a hit by pitch situation with bases loaded, scoring Ross.
- Flamholtz and Cami Duggan continued the fun with identical singles up the middle, Flamholtz picking up an RBI on Cullen, and Duggan two RBI off of Missavage and pinch runner, Lexi Abernathy.
- Lucas's proceeding hit to third ended up allowing the Golden Eagles to pick up two RBI off an error by the Lakers third basemen, moving the score to 8-2.
- The Lakers would put up three more runs in the top of the seventh, however not enough to change the outcome of the game, securing the Golden Eagles an 8-5 win.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles put up one run or more in five of the seven total innings.
- Koneski had a standout performance at the plate, putting up a 3-for-5 appearance with a run and four RBI.
- Cullen had a strong outing as well notching a 2-for-3 performance with three runs and two walks.
Game 2
- Palopoli picked up her sixth win of the season.
- The Golden Eagles put up eight runs and eight total hits.
- Lucas, Missavage, and Duggan each collected a pair of RBI.
- Ross had the strongest performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run, followed by Koneski who hit .500 with a run, an RBI and two walks.
UP NEXT –
The Golden Eagles games against Cortland scheduled for Sunday, April 13 were postponed due to weather so the team's next matchup will be Tuesday at Oneonta at 3 and 5 p.m.
