Golden Eagles fall at the hands of the Red Dragons, 11-4 and 7-3

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team welcomed SUNY Cortland to the Clark V. Whited Complex Wednesday afternoon ultimately falling to the Red Dragons in the pair of contests, 11-4 and 7-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
  • With the pair of losses, Brockport's overall record drops to 11-15 and 2-10 in conference play.
  • The Red Dragons improve to 16-11 and 8-2 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – 

Game 1
Loss, 11-4
  • Cortland initiated the scoring by notching three runs in the first two innings.
  • The Red Dragons piled on three more runs in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles were able to retaliate by scoring three runs of their own, bringing the score to 6-3.
  • Meghan Cullen got the inning started with a double to right center. The junior then crossed home plate in the next at bat off of Alison Missavage's double to left center.
  • Molly Ryan followed with an RBI single, scoring Missavage for the second Brockport run.
  • After the bases were loaded from an Alexis Ross single, Cami Duggan was walked bringing in Aren Schwab for the Golden Eagles third run of the inning.
  • Cortland continued to add to their lead scoring five more runs to bring their total to 11.
  • Kacie Hubbard and Cullen started the seventh off with back-to-back singles and Missavage added a single of her own to load the bases.
  • Cullen recorded the final run for the Golden Eagles on an error by the third basemen, closing out the game with a Red Dragon win, 11-4.
 
Game 2
Loss, 7-3
  • The first three innings of game two were a battle of the defenses, as neither team recorded a hit.
  • Two fourth inning solo home runs from Cortland broke the tie at 2-0.
  • An infield single from Cullen in the bottom of the fourth ended Cortland's no-hit bid, however, no runs were recorded, keeping it a 2-0 game in the Red Dragons favor.
  • Cortland was able to add four more runs in the sixth inning, but the Golden Eagles answered back with a run of their own.
  • Hubbard led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to bring the score to 6-1. Tori Thuman added a double to center field after but was held up short at third with outs from Schwab and Cullen to end the inning.
  • Jessica Koneski gave the Golden Eagles a fighting chance in the bottom of the seventh with a lead off hit by pitch. The Green and Gold then looked to use their speed off the bench as Lexi Abernathy would then enter to pinch run for her.
  • Danko was then walked and Morgan Flamholtz made it bases loaded on a fielder's choice/error combo with one out.
  • Missavage hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Abernathy and Danko, however that is all the Golden Eagles would get out of the inning.
  • The Red Dragon would take game two as well with a final score of 7-3.
KEY STATISTICS – 
 
Game 1
  • Cullen finished game one with a team high three hits on just four at bats.
  • Ryan finished 1-3 with a team high two RBI.
  • Missavage, Ross, and Koneski all finished with two hits.
Game 2 
  • Hubbard had one of Brockport's three hits finishing the game 1-for-3 with a home run.
  • Cullen finished 1-for-3 for the game as well, and 4-for-7 on the day.
  • Pitcher Julia Palopoli went the distance pitching all seven innings and struck out seven batters.

  • The Golden Eagles are back on the road this weekend, Saturday April 20 for a double header against SUNY Geneseo at 12 and 2 p.m.
