BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Looking to turn their luck around, The College at Brockport softball team welcomed nonconference opponent St. John Fisher College to the Clark V. Whited Complex Wednesday afternoon for a double header at 3 & 5 p.m.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- In their last nonconference appearance of the season, the Golden Eagles picked up a pair of losses to the Cardinals, dropping their overall record to 11-19.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
Loss, 11-3
- The Cardinals got off to a hot start, nailing five consecutive hits for six runs to start the first.
- Casey Danko gave the Golden Eagles their first run of the afternoon with a two-out solo homerun to left center in the bottom half of the inning.
- Despite the Green and Gold stringing together three more hits in the second, both pitchers would battle through the next two innings, holding each other scoreless.
- The Cardinals hit a hot streak in the top of the fourth to break open the game, adding five more runs to the board.
- Mandi Lucas and Meghan Cullen gave the Green and Gold base runners in the bottom of the fifth with two outs.
- Lexi Abernathy then added an offensive boost, placing a double down the left field line to score Lucas and Cullen.
- Despite a strong comeback attempt, the Cardinals would seal the deal in five innings, 11-3.
Game 2
Loss, 17-4
- The Golden Eagles struggled to hold off the Cardinals offense in game two as well, giving up 12 runs between the first four innings.
- The fourth inning proved to be the kick start that the Green and Gold needed offensively as they closed the gap to eight.
- Cami Duggan led off the bottom of the inning with a strong double down the left field line.
- Hubbard followed with a single up the middle, putting the Golden Eagles in a first and third situation.
- Abernathy loaded the bases with a walk, setting Lucas up for an RBI situation.
- The Golden Eagles picked up their first two runs off of a double to right center from Lucas, scoring Hubbard and Duggan.
- The hits proved to be contagious as Cullen added a single of her own, allowing her to pick up two RBI as well off of Lucas and Abernathy.
- Even though the Golden Eagles were able to pick up four runs in the fourth, the Cardinals offense went to work again, notching five more runs in the fifth.
- The five runs were enough to secure the Cardinals another five-inning victory, closing out game two with a 17-4 final.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Danko picked up her fourth home run of the season, putting her in a three-way tie for sixth place on the SUNYAC leader board.
- Danko, Cullen and Lucas recorded all three runs for the Golden Eagles, while Danko and Abernathy added the only two RBI.
Game 2
- Cullen, Duggan, and Hubbard each put up a 1-for-3 appearance at the plate. Duggan and Hubbard each added a run while Cullen added two RBI.
- Lucas had a strong outing as well, notching a run and two RBI.
UP NEXT –
- The Golden Eagles will take to their home turf again tomorrow afternoon for a double header against SUNY Potsdam at 3 & 5 p.m.
