BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team welcomed the Potsdam Bears to their home turf for the second to last conference matchup of the season.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles picked up a split against the Bears, moving their overall record to 12-20 and 3-13 in SUNYAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
Win, 7-6
- Game one was a constant battle of the offenses as both teams traded scores for the first four innings.
- The Golden Eagles put up their first run of the day in the bottom of the first. Morgan Flamholtz started the inning on second after an error by the left fielder.
- Kacie Hubbard gave Flamholtz the perfect scoring opportunity with a single up the middle, allowing the Green and Gold to tie the game at one.
- The Golden Eagles broke the game open offensively in the following inning, notching three more runs.
- Meghan Cullen led off the inning with a double to left center and was quickly advanced to second on a sacrifice by Alexis Ross.
- Casey Danko then put a hard ground ball in play, forcing an error by the shortstop, allowing Cullen to advance from second to home.
- With a runner on second and one out, Jess Koneski hit a sacrifice fly to right field to advance Danko to third.
- Flamholtz then added two more to the board with a long home run over the center field fence to move the score to 4-1.
- The Bears added three of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the game up and then would take the lead in the top of the fifth, 5-4.
- The Golden Eagles didn't allow them to hold on to the lead for long, putting two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
- This time Ross started things off with a single to left field, however the Green and Gold quickly found themselves with two outs after a double play situation in the following at bat.
- Koneski consequently took matters into her own hands, nailing a line drive over the center field fence for a solo RBI.
- Flamholtz followed suit with her second home run of the day, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead.
- The Bears took the game to the bottom of the seventh with a run of their own in the top of the sixth, tying the game at six.
- The Golden Eagles fought to end the game in regulation, however started the inning with a quick two outs.
- Koneski would give the Green and Gold a fighting chance with a two out double to right center, with Alison Missavage at the plate.
- Missavage capped off the afternoon with a walk off single down the right field line, scoring pinch runner Maggie Dorgan, securing the Golden Eagles a 7-6 win over the Bears.
Game 2
Loss, 5-2
- Game two started much differently than the first as both teams remained scoreless through the first two innings.
- The Golden Eagles and the Bears both put up a pair of runs in the third to tie the game at two.
- Danko opened up with a lead-off double to left center but didn't remain on the bases for long.
- Koneski marked her dominance at the plate once again, grabbing her second home run of the afternoon, scoring Danko in the process.
- Most of the action would lie in the third and fourth inning, as those were the only two innings that either team put up runs.
- The Bears notched three runs in the top of the fourth and despite a strong attempt, the Golden Eagles weren't able to capitalize on any opportunities after to retake the lead.
- Both teams remained scoreless for the duration of the game, closing out a 5-2 win for the Bears.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Julia Palopoli picked up her seventh win of the season.
- The Golden Eagles had three players notch a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including Koneski, Flamholtz, and Hubbard.
- Flamholtz led the team offensively, notching two home runs, three total runs and three RBI.
Game 2
- Koneski's second home run put her tied for second-place on the SUNYAC leaderboard.
- Cullen and Lexi Abernathy each had strong appearances at the plate, Cullen pulling out a 3-for-4 day and Abernathy notching 2-of-3.
- Danko and Koneski each had a 1-for-4 performance, while adding the only two runs of the game.
UP NEXT –
The Golden Eagles are set to close out their season this Saturday where they welcome SUNY Plattsburgh to the Clark V. Whited Complex for a double header at 12 and 2 p.m. The Green and Gold will also be hosting their senior day festivities as well as co-hosting the Hometown Heroes event.
