Golden Eagles Split with Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. –  After picking up an exciting sweep of D'Youville on Wednesday, the College at Brockport softball team took to the road for a conference heavy weekend. The Green and Gold opened up the weekend Saturday afternoon against the Fredonia Blue Devils.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP – 
  • The Golden Eagles picked up a split on the day with an 8-1 win in game one and an 8-5 loss in game two.
  • The 1-1 finish moves the Green and Gold to a 10-6 record overall and 1-3 in conference play. 
HOW IT HAPPENED – 

Game 1
  • Julia Palopoli had another strong outing for the Green and Gold, holding the Blue Devils to six hits and only one run.
  • Both teams picked up solo hits in the first inning however, neither able to capitalize on either opportunity.
  • The Golden Eagles opened up the scoring in the top of the third, beginning with Casey Danko's walk as the second batter in the inning.
  • After advancing to second on a passed ball, Jessica Koneski nailed a double to the outfield, scoring Danko.
  • Alison Missavage followed with a double of her own, consequently scoring Koneski to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth when the Green and Gold picked up another three runs.
  • This time Missavage would give the Golden Eagles their first base runner with a walk.
  • Morgan Flamholtz then put the team in good scoring position after nailing a single to center field.
  • Kacie Hubbard took advantage of the first and second situation with a three-run homerun up the middle, giving the Golden Eagles a healthy lead.
  • The Blue Devils picked up their solo run in the bottom of the fifth, however weren't able to produce another for the remainder of the game.
  • The Green and Gold sealed the deal in the seventh inning, adding three more runs to the board to secure their fate.
  • Flamholtz opened up the inning with a single to center field followed by an added base runner off a fielding error by the third basemen during Hubbard's proceeding at bat.
  • Cami Duggan then entered the game to pinch run for Flamholtz.
  • Aren Schwab now mimicking the fifth inning, put the ball over the fence for another three-run homerun, scoring Hubbard and Duggan.
  • Palopoli closed things out on the mound for the Golden Eagles, ending the game in four quick at bats.

Game 2
  • Freshman Cheyenne Wilson struggled to maintain consistency on the mound in game two, allowing the Blue Devils to pick up four runs in the first and the sixth inning.
  • It wasn't until the fourth inning that the Golden Eagles offense was able to find its groove, putting four runs of their own on the board.
  • Missavage opened up the top of the fourth with a walk followed by a single by Flamholtz to give the Green and Gold a first and second situation.
  • Duggan switched spots with Flamholtz, reaching first on a fielder's choice, however Missavage was marked safe on third after a throwing error by the third basemen.  
  • With bases loaded, Schwab added a strong infield hit, picking up an RBI on Missavage's advancement.
  • Tori Thuman put the Golden Eagles back in a bases loaded situation with a single to left field.
  • Meghan Cullen then picked up three RBI off a double to left field which consequently forced an error, allowing Thuman, Schwab and Duggan to score.
  • The Golden Eagles wouldn't pick up another run until the top of the sixth.
  • Alexis Ross led off the inning with a double to the left side followed by another clutch single by Cullen, allowing her to pick up a run.
  • Despite a strong effort to close the gap, the Green and Gold fell to the Blue Devils, 8-5.

KEY STATISTICS – 
 
Game 1
  • The Golden Eagles improved to a three-game win streak after their performance in game one.
  • With the win, Palopoli advances her record on the mound to 5-1 overall.
  • Schwab had the strongest performance at the plate for the Green and Gold, notching a 2-for-4 appearance with a run and three RBI.
  • Flamholtz, Hubbard, and Koneski were also essential pieces of the lineup, collectively accounting fours across the board. The three amassed four of the teams 11 hits, four of the teams eight runs, and four of the teams eight RBI.   
Game 2 
  • Cullen led the offense in game two, with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate while picking up four RBI.
  • The Golden Eagles finished the game with five runs, seven hits and five RBI.
