BUFFALO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team capped off their conference heavy weekend on Sunday with a double header against the Buffalo State Bengals at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP –
- The Golden Eagles dropped two tough one-run matchups to the Bengals – 8-7 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
- A pair of losses moves the teams overall record to 10-8 and 1-5 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED –
Game 1
- The Golden Eagles got to work right from the start, putting up a solo run in the top of the first inning.
- Alexis Ross opened up the game with a single through the right side, giving the Green and Gold their first baserunner of the day.
- Meghan Cullen kept the ball rolling with a single up the middle, advancing Ross to second.
- Despite picking up an out, Casey Danko's pop up then allowed Ross to advance to third, setting Jessica Koneski up for a perfect RBI situation.
- Koneski added a pop up of her own, scoring Ross to put the Golden Eagles on the board.
- The Bengals then added two runs of their own with a couple of timely hits.
- The bottom of the third inning brought some trouble for the Green and Gold as the Bengals picked up five runs off four hits to advance their lead to 7-1.
- After the third, Cheyenne Wilson came in to pitch for Julia Palopoli in an effort to close the deficit.
- The fifth inning proved to be lucky one for the Green and Gold as they amassed four runs in five hits to move the score to 7-5.
- Tori Thuman led things off with a single up the middle however, Ross would trade places with her after a fielder's choice on the bunt.
- Cullen and Danko would then both add singles to left side to give the Golden Eagles bases loaded with Koneski at the plate.
- Koneski added a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ross followed by a single to center by Alison Missavage allowing both Danko and Cullen to score.
- Morgan Flamholtz posted the final run of the inning with a shot to left field, scoring Missavage.
- The Golden Eagles bats continued to remain hot into the sixth where they picked up another two runs to tie the game at seven.
- Aren Schwab would lead things off this time with a single to right field however, her and Thuman traded places shortly after.
- Ross gave the Green and Gold another first and second situation with a single to third base, her speed working to the team's advantage.
- After a wild pitch that would move Ross and Thuman to second and third, Cullen nailed a single to center, scoring them both.
- The comeback, however, was not strong enough for the Golden Eagles to pick up a win, as the Bengals sealed their fate in the bottom of the sixth with a solo run to put them ahead in regulation.
Game 2
- The Golden Eagles looked to turn the tides in game two with freshman Megan Van Dorn leading them on the mound.
- Ross was the leading force in game two as well, opening up the top of the first with a single to left center.
- Cullen proceeded with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop, consequently forcing a fielding error to give the Green and Gold first and second.
- Both runners would advance on a wild pitch, giving Danko two runners in scoring position.
- The junior then sank one in the left field gap, picking up two RBI on the Ross and Cullen.
- Missavage was the next to take advantage of runners on base, doubling to left center to score Danko to move the Golden Eagles lead to 3-0.
- Schwab would add the final run of the inning with a two-out single up the middle, opening the door up for Missavage to score.
- The Golden Eagles four runs in the first inning would be their only runs of the game which allowed the Bengals to capitalize on offensive opportunities in the third, sixth and seventh inning to sweep the day with a 5-4 win.
KEY STATISTICS –
Game 1
- Cullen commanded the batter's box, putting up a perfect 4-for-4 appearance at the plate with a run and two RBI. Ross followed not far behind, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs.
- Missavage and Koneski both added a pair of RBI.
Game 2
- Missavage and Ross put up the strongest performances at the plate, Missavage with a hit, a run and an RBI and Ross with two hits and a run.
