Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team picked up its first win of the young season in convincing fashion on Saturday night, as the stifling Golden Eagle defense did not surrender a single shot on its way to a 5-0 victory over Westminister (PA) in the home opener at Bob Boozer Field.
The contest featured five different goal scorers for the home team as the Golden Eagles evened their record at 1-1 following a tight 3-2 loss on the road at RIT on Friday night. Brockport outshot the visitors 13-0 and also earned a 9-0 corner kick advantage in the commanding victory. Westminster (0-1) headed into their first contest of the season riding the highs of yet another NCAA Division III Tournament berth in 2018.
Sophomore sensation
Matthew Stefaniw netted his second goal in as many games and currently leads the defending SUNYAC champs with five points on the season. He is proving that his productive freshman year was no fluke and he now has 14 career goals.
Senior
Jeff Hibbard chipped in with two helpers and he ranks second on the team with four points this season after finding the back of the net on Friday in the opener. Hibbard now has 10 goals and nine assists over the course of his career in the green and gold.
DJ Taylor got things started on Saturday night when he netted his first of the year off assists from Hibbard and
Chris Kinsley at 18:49. Hibbard picked up his second assist less than ten minutes later when he connected with
Brett Healey at 27:27 to put the Golden Eagles on top 2-0. Just 23 seconds later Stefaniw broke through a slew of Titan defenders and maintained composure through the scoring strike to put the home team on top by three goals just over halfway way through the first half.
Nikolas Sgaraglio and
Zach Langelotti each tallied an insurance goal to put the contest away in the second half. Hayes and Stefaniw assisted on the Sgaraglio goal.
Tautis Poniskaitis and
Joseph Romano split time in net for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport, which was receiving votes in the preseason national polls after advancing to the second round of NCAA's last Fall, returns home on Friday night when it takes on Clarkson University in non-conference action. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
