Rematch of Last Year's NCAA First Round Game Set for Saturday's Home Opener

The College at Brockport football team is set to host Framingham State in the home opener for the Golden Eagles Saturday on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

GAME NOTES

Ticket Information:Tickets for the Saturday's opener will be $5 for the general public and senior citizens/high school students/children are $3. Brockport students, faculty and staff are free with ID. Tickets are available online through Brockport ticket sales, and at the gate. $5 tickets can be purchased online HERE.There is no will call at the event. Please have either your e-ticket printed out or available to scan on your cell phone. 

Eagle Empire: Brockport's Eagle Empire events are a partnership with Brockport Student Government (BSG) to help add excitement to the fan experience on gameday!  Eagle Empire and BSG will have a presence at select athletic contests and the initiative provides fans a chance to win Brockport themed prizes and snacks while also participating in intermission and halftime events at the contest.  Make sure to keep your eye out for the Eagle Empire halftime challenge as well as the Eagle Empire Wheel for a chance to win great prizes! 

Follow The Action: All five of Brockport's home games will be broadcast live by Roc Sports Network (RSN). ROCSportsNetwork.com is Rochester's only local network showcasing Rochester and Western New York sports through podcasts, television shows and game broadcasts both online and on television. Saturday's game will be streamed live on gobrockport.com/watch.  Live audio for all games will be provided by 89.1 The Point, Brockport's student radio station. Live stats for all home contests will be available at gobrockport.com. 

Receiving Votes: Brockport football is receiving votes in the latest d3football.com national poll. The Golden Eagles rose to as high as No. 3 in the national polls headed into the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships last season, a new program best. Brockport has been a fixture in the top 25 each week dating back to week 1 of 2017. The top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly. 

Sideline General: Seventh year Head Coach Jason Mangone has been named the AFCA Region I Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons and he has an impressive 49-20 overall record over the course of six-plus seasons at the helm. Mangone and his staff have earned two straight Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year honors after compiling a 24-2 overall record in that span.  In 2017 he was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to the semifinals of the NCAA Div. III Championships.

Home Sweet Home:Brockport is 4-1 in its last five home openers dating back to 2014. The Golden Eagles have outscored its opponents 202-72 over the course of those five contests. Brockport topped Hobart (56-7) and Ithaca (31-0) in each of its last two home openers at Bob Boozer field. 

Second Time Meeting Framingham:Brockport and Framingham squared off in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships, with the Golden Eagles earning a 40-27 victory to earn a spot in the Sweet 16. DaQuan Hubbard caught five balls for 160 yards and a TD in the contest, while Joseph Ortiz added seven catches for 81 yards.  On the defensive side of the ball Alex West was all over the field as he posted five tackles, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and three QB hurries. Josh Greenwood added five tackles and a half sack for the Golden Eagles. 

Record Watch:Ortiz eclipsed 2,000 yards for his career and now needs just seven more catches to tie the school-record.  He currently has 213 career catches and 2,060 career receiving yards. DaQuan Hubbard caught three balls for 82 yards in week one.  Hubbard now has 82 career catches for 1,831 yards and 17 touchdowns.  He is eight TD catches shy of the College's career record. 
 
Week 1 Recap:The nationally-ranked Brockport football team lost its season opener on the road at Hobart College 33-7 Saturday afternoon. Ortiz caught eight balls for 85 yards. Brockport's lone touchdown of the day knotted the score at 7-7 in the first quarter as senior QB Jason Hellwig connected with Jala Coad on a seven yard TD pass to cap a 12 play, 75 yard scoring drive. Hobart posted 26 unanswered points on its way to the victory. Raylens Boutin and Jason Karteron each posted five tackles for Brockport.  Karteron also picked off a pass for the Golden Eagles defense.  Lawrence Jenkins totaled four tackles, including a team-best 3.0 tackles for a loss of 10 yards. Pre-season All-American Alex West added four tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss. 

Dominating the Stat Lines:Despite falling in its season opener, Brockport earned a heavy advantage in most stat lines.  The Golden Eagles won the first down battle 22-9.  The defense played extremely well regardless of the outcome. They also held the Statesmen to just 191 yards of total offense and just 44 rushing yards on the ground. Brockport won the time of possession battle 35:33-24:27. Brockport's D held Hobart to 4-of-13 on third down opportunities.  The Golden Eagles will have to minimize costly turnovers on Saturday while getting the ball out quicker in passing situations.  The Golden Eagle defense also caused three fumbles and intercepted two passes.  

Under Center:Senior Jason Hellwig completed 16-of-32 passes for 171 yards against Hobart.  Freshman Freddy June, a threat in the air and on the ground, got his first collegiate snaps under center and will continue to progress as the year rolls on, while Keion Jones completed six passes for 47 yards. 

Ground & Pound:Justin Morrison, Zach Samborski and Jala Coad saw the bulk of the carries in week one as expected.  Samborski carried the ball five times for 19 yards, while Morrison posted six carries for 13 yards. Coad carried the ball 15 times for 37 yards and also caught four passes for 33 yards and a score.  

Spreading the Ball Around:Seven different players caught at least one pass in week one.  Junior transfer Imhotep Cromer, classmate Alex Benson and Hubbard each caught three balls for the Golden Eagles. Ortiz led the way with eight catches. 

Pressure in the Backfield:Brockport's defense featured six different players who played a part in a tackle for a loss in Saturday's opener. Lawrence Jenkins led the way with 3.0 tackles for a loss of ten yards and he also posted one quarterback hurry to go along with his four tackles.  Josh Greenwood and Hakeem Yaya each added 2.0 tackles for a loss, while preseason All-American Alex West chipped in with four tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss.  

Roaming the Secondary:Senior linebacker Jason Karteron and sophomore defensive back Kenny Hernandez each posted one interception in week one at Hobart.  Raylens Boutin, Ben Marshall and Alaan Montgomery were each credited with a pass breakup for the Golden Eagle defense. 

Back-to-Back Champs:Brockport won its second straight Empire 8 Conference title and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Div. III Championship while registering an 11-1 overall record in 2018.  Brockport's repeat as Empire 8 Champs came courtesy of consecutive 10-0 regular season efforts.  In 2017, the Golden Eagles advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships.  

Meet the Opponent:Framingham State is the reigning MASCAC Champion, earning an automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Championships.  The Rams are coming off a week one road loss against Endicott, 55-27. Freshman running back Devaun Ford was selected as the MASCAC Football Rookie of the Week for his efforts. In his first collegiate action, Ford rushed nine times for 69 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Senior quarterback Adam Wojenski completed 19 passes for 246 yards, but also threw four interceptions. Jacob Maher was the top target for Wojenski, as he pulled in eight catches for 77 yards. Joshua Onujiogu led the Rams with 12 tackles, while Anthony Behonick added ten total tackles and three tackles for a loss. 

In the Coming Weeks:Brockport will hit the road in week three to take on Buffalo State in non-conference action at 12 p.m. On Sept. 28ththe Golden Eagles return to Bob Boozer Field for Homecoming & Family Weekend on campus. Brockport will host Alfred State for homecoming this year and the contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
