BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The College at Brockport volleyball team has a light week ahead, with a solo matchup on Wednesday against SUNY Geneseo, their first conference opponent of the year.
The Golden Eagles enter the week with a 4-8 record after hosting a competitive home tournament this past weekend.
Last Time They Met: The Knights finished the 2018 season as conference champions, notching a perfect 9-0 record in conference and 22-10 overall. The Golden Eagles put up a fight against their powerhouse offense, however saw defeat in three straight sets.
Lindsey Luce and
Meaghan Mastro led the Green and Gold offensively, accounting for 14 kills, seven digs, and 14.5 points.
What To Expect: The Golden Eagles are catching the Knights at a weak point, after a tough weekend at the MIT Tournament in Massachusetts, where the team recorded three straight losses. The Knights welcome five newcomers to the team this season with senior outside hitter Grace Cergol leading the pack. Cergol is a 2x SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year and has led the lead in kills for two straight seasons. Cergol and Mastro currently hold the fifth and sixth spot on the SUNYAC leaderboard in kills and should be a strong matchup in tomorrow's game.
Golden Eagles To Watch: Mastro and
Andrea Coyle have had a great start to the 2019 season, each providing the Golden Eagles with an offensive backbone. Mastro currently leads the team with 142.5 points averaging 3.24 per set while notching 107 kills, 17 assists and 14 service aces. Coyle falls not far behind the junior, posting 107.5 points (2.99 per set), 96 kills, five assists and six service aces. The two are a secret weapon for the Green and Gold as the dynamic between them has allowed for them to be effective from multiple areas of the court.
The Golden Eagles have an off weekend this week and will pick things back up next Friday on home court against SUNY Plattsburgh at 6 p.m.
