Brockport's Comeback Bid Falls Just Short in Opener at Ferrum

FERRUM, VA --  The SUNY Brockport baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision in its season opener on the road Friday afternoon at Ferrum College. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the home team responded with 11 straight runs in its next three at-bats and eventually held on for the four run victory.

Sophomore Ryan Voight went 2-for-5 on the day and totaled a career-high five RBIs to go along with his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to guide the Golden Eagles comeback bid.  Shortstop Justin Pangburn added a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs and two runs scored for the visitors.

Trevor McCarthy got the opening day start on the mound for the Golden Eagles and struck out five batters in 5.1 innings of work.

Skyler Ohrvall added three hits in the opener for Brockport and he also plated one run scored, while senior catcher Reilly Workman added a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored.

Pangburn got the Golden Eagles going in the top of the third inning when he doubled to right field, scoring Workman, to make it a 1-0 ball game.  Voight then singled through the right side to score Tom Kretzler and Nicholas Pastore to put the Golden Eagles on top 3-0.

Ferrum scored its first run of the day in the bottom half of the third inning and then added four more in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 advantage over Brockport.  The Panthers posted six more runs in bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 11-3.  The big inning for the home team featured a three RBI triple by Grey Sherfey.
