Brockport Drops a Pair of Games on Day Two in Virginia

FERRUM, VA -- The SUNY Brockport baseball team dropped a pair of games in Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles could not hold on to an early lead in the opening game of the day against Alfred State as the Pioneers rallied for an 8-2 victory.  Brockport fought hard in game two against host Ferrum College, but the Panthers platted three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away from the Golden Eagles.

Ryan Voight continued his hot start to the 2020 season as he went 3-for-7 with one RBI on the day.  Tom Kretzler went 4-for-10 with three runs scored and Nicholas Pastore was 4-for-10 with one run scored. James Houlahan added a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs.

Game One – Alfred State 8, Brockport 3 – Final
In the opening game against Alfred, Nicholas Pastore went 3-for-5 at the dish, while Tom Kretzler added a 3-for-5 day and scored all three of Brockport's runs.  Ryan Voight went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

James Houlahan got the Golden Eagles on the board when scored Kretzler on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.  Skyler Ohrvall reached on an error in the third inning, scoring Kretzler, while Voight added a sac fly in the fifth inning – also scoring Kretzler – to account for the third and final run of the contest for the Golden Eagles.

Alfred's bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning as they knotted the score at 2-2 after a pair of sacrifice fly's.  The Pioneers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a two RBI double and then added four more runs down the stretch off a two RBI home run in the seventh and a two RBI single up the middle in the top of the ninth.

Kyle Canavally pitched 4.0 innings of stellar ball for the Golden Eagles and allowed just one hit while striking out three.

Game Two: Ferrum 5, Brockport 2 - Final

The night cap against Ferrum – the second meeting of the weekend between the two teams – proved to be tight contest throughout.

After two scoreless innings Ferrum jumped out to 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third following two RBI singles.

Sophomore Ryan Mansell bunted for a single in the top of the fifth, scoring Nicholas Pastore, to make it a 2-1 ball game.  Houlahan then added a single through the left side, scoring Mansell, to knot the score at 2-2 in the fifth.

However, the Panthers broke the stalemate in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs – including a two RBi single to right field – to help the home team earn the three run victory.

Mansell finished game two going 3-for-5 at the dish with one RBI and one run scored.  Houlahan went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and Ryan Voight continued his hot start to the season with a 2-for-4 effort.

Each team finished the night with nine hits.  Andrew Huffman pitched 5.2 innings on the mound for Brockport and struck out eight while allowing just two earned runs.  Ryan Greco added 1.1 relief innings of scoreless work and Jason Hellwig pitched 2/3's of an inning while striking out one for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport returns to the diamond on Saturday when the Golden Eagles take on Alfred State in Ferrum, VA for the second time in as many days. The contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. before Brockport makes the trip back to New York State.
