Brockport Falls to Oswego in Shootout

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport field hockey team fell to the Oswego State Lakers on Tuesday night by a score of 4-3 in a shootout. Katelynn Mello tallied two goals to her name this season while Alyssa Fuccilo scored off an assist by Paige Thowe.

Following a solid first quarter of defensive play from both teams which resulted in a scoreless ending, the second quarter started off with a goal by Oswego's Kaitlyn Mastracco at the 19:21 mark of the game. Nearly three minutes later at the 22:06 mark, Oswego's Alyssa DeMichael scored following an assist from Mastracco to increase Oswego's lead to 2-0.

The Golden Eagles were not going down without a fight though as Katelynn Mello waited for her opportunity and nearly two minutes following Oswego's last goal, Mello would score following a breakaway to get the ball to the back of the cage at the 24:26 mark. To make things even closer after a short three minutes of play, Alyssa Fuccillo would receive a pass from Paige Thowe right in front of the cage as she barely had to tap the ball to redirect past the Oswego goalkeeper to even up the score.

Starting off the third period tied at two, Katelynn Mello would once again receive another two points in the game when she took an opportunity off a deflected shot to give the Golden Eagles the lead for the first time in the game with twenty minutes left on the clock. The Golden Eagles would play strong defense for the entirety of the fourth quarter, until with 16 seconds remaining in the game Kaitlyn Mastracco would even up the game following a pass from Abby Testo, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Golden Eagles battled hard, putting shot after shot on goal for the Green and Gold with outstanding defense by Jillian Owens and Emily Hall. After two periods of 10:00 minute overtime neither Brockport nor Oswego could capitalize which would send the game into a shootout which saw Oswego's Abby Testo score the game winner after five rounds to give the Lakers the 4-3 victory.

In what seemed to be a lopsided game on the shots side, Brockport managed to get off a total of 37 shots against the Lakers with 30 being on goal compared to that of Oswego's nine shots with eight being on goal. For goalkeepers, Erica Scheblein played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Lakers, recording 26 saves while Emma Acevedo Managed to play a career high 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles in which she made five saves.

Mello's two goals in the game advance her to fifth all time in career points with 56 and is now tied for ninth in program history with a total of 19 goals.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, October 23rd where they'll travel to Morrisville and take on the Mustangs in a 1 p.m. conference matchup.
