Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team gets the new season started at home this weekend as it hosts the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament. They take on Medaille at 7 pm on Friday for the first game of the year.
Tip-Off Tournament: The Golden Eagles will be hosting Medaille College, Morrisville State, and Keuka College this weekend for the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament. The first match of the event features the Morrisville Mustangs taking on the Wolves from Keuka at 5 pm on Friday. Brockport then plays Medaille at 7 pm to wrap up the first day of action. The losing teams from day one will then meet up at 1 pm on Saturday in the Consolation Game, while the winners face-off in the Championship Game at 3 pm on Saturday.
2019 Recap: Brockport completed its last season in 2019-20, earning a record of 11-15 overall and 8-10 in SUNYAC play. The squad clinched a spot in the postseason in the final week of the regular season, making its fifth straight appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament. An 81-73 win over Oswego to close out the regular season earned Brockport the sixth seed for the conference tournament. The traveled to play Geneseo in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals, which resulted in a 66-52 loss and ending the season. The Green and Gold did not play in 2020-21 due to the season being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the Driver's Seat: Head Coach
Corinne Jones is in her seventh year leading the program, entering her sixth season in the driver's seat. Since taking control of the team back in 2015, the Golden Eagles have made the SUNYAC Tournament every year to make five straight postseason runs, including two trips to the SUNYAC Semifinals in the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons. Coach Jones looks to make it six straight trips to the conference tournament this season after the Green and Gold missed out on playing last year.
Key Returners: The Golden Eagles are returning seven players from the 2019-20 roster, which is made up of all upperclassmen in three seniors and four juniors.
Kylee Rosbrook returns for her senior season after she was the team's leading rebounder and second leading scorer last season. Rosbrook averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 boards per game, while also blocking a team-high 22 shots as a sophomore. The team also welcomes back its most efficient shooters at the free throw line and beyond the arc.
Chelsea Henry led the team with after shooting 81.3% at the foul line and teammate
Erin Radack was successful on 42% of her 3-point shots in 2019-20. Radack also led the team in steals and was second in assists. All of the other returning players;
Anna Felice,
Serena Sordetto,
Nicole Leslie, and
Riqiya Harris each have valuable experience from playing in over 20 games for Brockport last season.
New Faces: The squad is welcoming in nine newcomers to the Brockport family this season, which includes six players from this year's freshman class. The team also added three transfers to the roster in graduate student
Erin Nolan, as well as juniors
Eliza Conyers and
Molly Mahony. The list of freshman players includes
Sophia Murray,
Juan Brown,
Hali Lucia,
Shannon Blankenship,
Zoe Zutes, and
Anna Lee. Keep an eye out for which new additions step up and make an impact right away this year.
Schedule Layout: The Green and Gold start the season with its home tournament before hitting the road for three of the next four contests. Tuesday, November 30
th marks the start of SUNYAC play as the Blue Devils of Fredonia come to town. After the calendar turns to 2022, Brockport will host three straight home games in the same week against Alfred State (Jan. 5
th), Oneonta (Jan. 7
th), and New Paltz (Jan. 8
th). After that the squad will be on the road for four outings in a row. The final stretch of the regular season will consist of four straight home games, three straight road games, and the regular season finale against Buffalo State at home on February 19
th. The SUNYAC Tournament is last on the schedule which begins on February 22
nd for the squads around the conference that qualify.
Looking Ahead: The Golden Eagles hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday, November 16
th. They travel to take on the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at 7 pm.
