Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team will host Morrisville State on Tuesday night for its home opener. Brockport looks to continue its incredible win streak on its home floor, as it has won 17 in a row in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles were on the road for the season opener, as they headed out to Alfred University. They would fall short against the Saxons with an 82-72 loss, starting the season off 0-1. This loss would snap the team's 19-game winning streak that began during the program's 2019 run to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Down just two points at halftime, Brockport kept the contest close throughout most of the second half before Alfred pulled away in the final minutes.
Something About The Vlog: Going into Tuesday night's home opener, the Green and Gold hold an incredible streak of games on the home court. In 2019 the squad was a perfect 15-0 in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium, extending the home winning streak to 17 games. This streak began back on February 16
th, 2019 with an 84-65 win over Cortland. February 15
th, 2019 was Brockport's last loss at home coming by the way of an 85-69 slip up against Oswego. The team will have a chance to extend this amazing streak against Morrisville in this year's home opener.
Right Where They Left Off: In the season opening contest against Alfred University,
Jahidi Wallace and
Devante Hagins picked up right where they left off back in 2019. The team's leading scorer from the Sweet 16 run,
Jahidi Wallace led the Green and Gold with 16 points on the road against the Saxons. He shot 60% from the floor and was 3-for-4 at the charity stripe, while also adding three boards and two steals.
Devante Hagins, 2019's leading rebounder, was all over the court, stuffing the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block.
Impressive Debuts: Despite the loss, some of the new additions to the squad this year played well in their first game wearing the Brockport colors.
David Grady III was one of three players to reach double figures in the scoring column, finishing with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting. He also demonstrated his ability to protect the rim with three blocked shots.
Hakeem Dobbins came up just shy of a double-digit scoring night in his debut for the Golden Eagles. In just nine minutes of action, Dobbins registered nine points on 3-for-5 shooting with two boards and two assists.
Looking for Payback: The Golden Eagles lost to Morrisville State last season in their 2019 season opener, 73-70.
Jahidi Wallace led all scorers in the game with 19 points, doing most of his damage at the free throw line shooting 11-for-14 at the stripe. The bench outscored the Mustang reserves, 23-13, but Morrisville outrebounded Brockport 41-26 including a 17-4 difference on the offensive boards. A missed free throw and a turnover in the final 10 seconds of the contest ultimately sealed the deal, as Brockport came up short on the road. This time Morrisville comes to The Vlog for its season opener, as the Green and Gold look for payback after last year's meeting.
Looking Ahead: The Golden Eagles are back on the road for their next outing, when they travel for a matchup against Hobart College. The game is scheduled for a 7 pm start on Tuesday, November 16
