The SUNY Brockport softball team split a SUNYAC West doubleheader against host Geneseo on Monday afternoon. Brockport dropped a close contest in game one, 3-2, before rallying in game two to earn a key 5-4 victory.
Madison Evarts finished the day going 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored, while
Morgan Skpowski went 2-for-8 with four clutch RBI's on the afternoon.
Kacie Hubbard finished the day going 2-for-7 with one run scored, while
Amanda Blakely went 2-for-6 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Julia Palopoli came on in relief in game two and did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work to earn the victory.
Catherine Johnson closed out game two on the mound and allowed just one hit while striking out three to pick up the save for Brockport. Johnson also went the distance in game one and struck out five but registered her first loss of the season as Geneseo rallied for the one run victory.
The Golden Eagles are now 4-4 overall and 4-4 in SUNYAC play this season. They return to the diamond on Friday when they host Buffalo State for their home opener at 1 p.m. Geneseo's record moved to 7-4 overall on the season.
Geneseo 3, Brockport 2 – Game One Final
After three scoreless innings the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Golden Eagles made their late rally. Skpowski drove in a two-RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, scoring Evarts and Blakely to knot the score at 2-2.
Geneseo's Taylor Riccardi singled in the sixth, scoring Samantha Seeger to hand the Knights a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Skpowski finished game one going 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's, while
Syd Bolton added two hits for the Golden Eagles. Evarts was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one and also scored a run. Johnson went the distance on the mound in game one and struck out five batters for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport 5, Geneseo 4 – Game Two Final
Brockport jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning in game two behind a two-RBI double from the bat of Blakely. Her double scored
Jenna Downey and Hubbard to give the green and gold an early advantage. Downey finished game two going 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Geneseo got one run back in the bottom of the second, but the Golden Eagles were able to extend their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth after Evarts reach on a fielding error to score Downey.
The Knights put the pressure on the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth inning as they took a 4-3 lead after two runs crossed the plate in the inning for the home team.
Skpowski came through with a clutch single in a big spot for Brockport in the top of the sixth to give the visitors the lead for good. Her single scored Evarts and Blakely to give the Golden Eagles a 5-4 advantage.
Macy Kane got the game two start on the mound for Brockport and she struck out one in 3.1 inning of work before being relieved by Palopoli. Palopoli was nearly flawless in relief as she did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work to earn the victory. Johnson finished the game on the mound for Brockport and struck out three to earn the game two save.
Blakely finished game two going 2-for-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. Hubbard also went 2-for-4 in game two.
