Track & Field Opens Season at Geneseo Saturday

BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport track & field program begins its outdoor campaign on Saturday as the Golden Eagles head to SUNY Geneseo. This will be the first competition the team has seen since the 2020 indoor season. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Live results for Saturday's meet will be provided by Leone Timing and can be accessed on the web at www.leonetiming.com.

Meet the Staff: Longtime head coach Ed Jaskulski has spent the last 18 years as a coach, teacher, strength & condition coordinator and student-athlete (football/track & field) at Brockport.  Last March he was named the Atlantic Region Men's Coach of the Year and in the last 10 years, he has helped over 50 athletes earn a spot in the school record book. He has helped produce 102 SUNYAC Champions, 85 National Qualifiers, 17 women's and 16 men's All Americans, and three National Champions. Jaskulski is joined by a strong group of assistants including Head Cross Country Coach John Davis, who will work with the distance program during track & field. Andy Fetzner (pole vault), Kylie Ryan (sprints/multis/hurdles) and Jack Palmeri (jumps) round out the coaching staff for the Golden Eagles this season.

Setting the Bar: The Brockport men finished their last competitive indoor season ranked No. 15 in the nation by the USTFCCCA.  During that season the men's shot-put group finished the indoor season ranked second nationally in the #EventSquad rankings with the long jump squad placing sixth in the national rankings as well. A total of five event groups finished in the top 20 nationally during the indoor season including shot put (2nd), Long Jump (6th) weight throw (11th), Triple Jump (13th), and 60 meters (20th).

The Brockport women's team also had their fair share of event rankings as well. Led by the triple jump squad who finished ranked fourth in the nation, the women's side had five squads ranked in the #EventSquad rankings. Brockport ranked in the top 20 in the triple jump (4th), pole vault (7th), long jump (8th), shot put (10th), and weight throw (12th).

It's a Sprint: With Satin Holmes taking a year off, the women's team will turn to Brianna Lawless who recorded the team's best times in the 200 meter (25.96), 400 meter (59.41) and 500 meter (1:26.72) races. Other returners looking to step up this year are senior Ashley Martinez, sophomore Sarah Levine as well as incoming freshmen Rhea Winter and Taylor Allen.

Returning to the sprinter's blocks this outdoor season is Olivier Kothor, who won the SUNYAC title in the 60-meter dash after posting a school-record time of 6.9 during his last indoor campaign. He finished last indoor season ranked 21st nationally in the 60 meter dash. Another noticeable sprinter to watch out for is Devon Legrair, who managed to record the fastest time in the 400 meters (50.92) for Brockport last indoor season.

The Jump Squad: The Bport jumps squad finished the 2020 indoor season ranked ninth nationally. Indoor long jump record holder Chanyce Powell returns as a six-time national qualifier and a three-time All-American. She will have her eye on a national championship in the long jump and possibly the triple jump. She looks to start where she left off by winning the SUNYAC Triple Jump Championship and setting a personnel record of 11.82m (38' 9.5"). Powell also led the team in the long jump category with a mark of 5.71 meters which is a school indoor record. Another big name returning to the pits this season is Mia Montgomery, who is looking to help out in the long jump and triple jump category.  Halle King, who also competes in the high jump events, hopes to qualify for a spot in nationals this season as well.

In the men's section, back for his senior year will be Egypt Page who ranked No. 2 in the nation and 70th across all three NCAA Divisions in the long jump event last indoor season. Page placed first at the 2020 SUNYAC Indoor Championships and broke the school's indoor long jump record (7.49m). Page looks to go from second to first in the outdoor record books as he aims to break the 37-year-old record of 7.36m. Fifth year jumper Taj Shaw led the team in the triple jump event with his season high mark of 14.40m. He was able to reach the Atlantic Regionals after a third-place finish at the SUNYAC Championships. Shaw finished out the season ranked No. 19 in the country in the triple jump.

Throwers Gotta Throw: After having one of the best indoor seasons in recent memory the Brockport men's throwing team finished the season ranked No.2 in the shotput event while also coming in at No.11 in the weight throw category for indoor. Leading the men's team and back for a fifth season is Tony DeYoung. DeYoung finished the season ranked as the No.1 shot put thrower in all of Division III (#85 overall in NCAA). DeYoung captured all seven regular season first place finishes in the shot put, while also claiming first place at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships. He also set the school's indoor record (17.86m) while capturing gold at the Atlantic Regional Indoor Championships. Working his way from the indoor competition of weight throw to the outdoor events of hammer throw, shot put and discus is fifth year Matt Faulise. Similar to the hammer throw during the previous indoor season, Felice led the team in the weight throw (17.32m), good for fourth in the college's indoor record book.

After finishing ranked eighth nationally in the shot put and 15th in the weight throw category the women's team looks to have another great season. Returning for her sophomore campaign is All-American Sarah Crockett who finished ranked No.16 in the nation in the shot-put category with a mark of 13.70m. She also finished second on the team in the weight throw (16.04m). Senior Alayna Fredenburg won a SUNYAC title in the weight throw (16.41m) and took second in the Atlantic Region. In her last outdoor competition, she placed third at regionals in the javelin and also added a second place finish at SUNYAC's (37.47m). She will also compete in the discus, hammer throw and shot put this outdoor season. Olivia George finished fourth in the conference in the weight throw in her previous outdoor season. She also placed second at SUNYAC's and third in the Atlantic Region in the hammer throw event behind Brockport alumna Jess Craven.

Going the Distance: Returning for the Green and Gold women's team in the 800m, Jennifer Metz (fifth 400m and eighth in 800m SUNYAC) and Rose Pitman (sixth 800in SUNYAC) will be just some of the women to watch after team leader Holly Heil graduated last year. Running in the 1,500m, 5k and 10k will be Abbygail Clouden, who finished 10th at the Indoor Atlantic-Regional and sixth in the 3k/5k double at SUNYAC's.

After having an impressive indoor season Humberto Wallace Jr. is hungry to get back out on the track. He finished seventh in the mile race at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships with a personal record of 4.22.77. He also led the team in the 800m, mile and 3000m events. Teammate Marius Sidlauskas will push Wallace in the 3000m. With Gerard Connelly graduating, senior Ethan Carey will be a contributor in the 10k and potentially the 5k race.

The Pole Vault: With All-American Maya Reina graduating last year, it leaves opportunity open to fill the top pole vault spot on the team. Looking to compete for that top spot will be senior Gillian Laco, junior Madison Baker and freshman Tess Eichner.

Into The Multiverse: Senior Mike Panzarino finished 23rd in the nation and won the heptathlon at SUNYAC last indoor season. Panzarino searches to add even more events to what he can do when he transitions to compete in the decathlon during the outdoor season. The decathlon includes the pole vault, high jump, long jump, javelin, shot put, discus, 110m hurdles, 100-meter dash, 400-meter run and 1500-meter run. After her first year competing in the multi events, Madison Baker will be upgrading from the indoor pentathlon to the outdoor heptathlon. The heptathlon includes the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, and 800m.

Run Fast and Jump High:  Junior Brandon Leiter finished fourth at SUNYACs in the 110-meter hurdles during his last outdoor campaign.  Leiter also adds solid depth at the high jump and long jump for the Golden Eagles.

What's in Store: The Golden Eagle track and field team returns to competitive action for the first time in over a year on Saturday at 1p.m. in the Early Season Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo. Two weeks after their first taste of competition the green and gold will send their distance runners to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday April 16th while the rest of the team heads home for the Golden Eagle Multi-Invitational where all events will regroup on the second day of the invitational at Brockport on Saturday April 17.
