The nationally-ranked No. 14 SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in the SUNYAC Championship game, 15-13, at No. 17 SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon.
Brockport's
Allison Jennings,
Heather Conklin,
Cassidy Burnash and
Logan Hibbard were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Jennings finished the tournament with nine goals, while Burnash added four goals and two assists over the course of the two game stretch.
Heather Conklin posted seven goals in the tournament and
Logan Hibbard added five goals and one assist.
Brockport will now await a potential at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA's online selection show will air on Monday at 10:30 a.m. where the NCAA National Committee will release the tournament participants.
The Golden Eagles (10-3) snapped a 10 game winning streak with the loss to the Red Dragons. Cortland was now won 12 straight and improved to 7-0 at home this season. The Red Dragons have earned the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will certainly be tuning into the selection show to find out where they will be playing next weekend.
Cortland outscored Brockport 8-5 in the second half of the contest to essentially seal the victory. The Golden Eagles made a push in the final 14 minutes of the contest, netting three goals in a nine minute stretch, but the Red Dragons four goals advantage, 15-11, with 8:13 remaining in the contest proved to be too much to overcome.
Brockport's
Heather Conklin posted two goals on the afternoon to increase her program-record goal total to 222. She also registered nine draw controls to lead the way for the Golden Eagles.
Allison Jennings posted a team-high five goals, while
Cassidy Burnash added three goals and one assist on the day.
Logan Hibbard also added two goals and
Danielle Hemly added one goal for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-7 lead in the first half to take the lead into the half. Burnash, Conklin and Jennings got Brockport going in the first half as they each netted a goal in the first seven minutes to give Bport an early 3-1 lead.
The Red Dragons responded with three straight goals from the tournament Most Valuable Player Hannah Lorenzen to hand the home team a 4-3 advantage with 17:02 to go in the first half.
Brockport punched back with four of the games next five goals to take a 7-5 lead with 8:52 to go in the first half. Jennings netted two goals in the stretch, while Burnash and Hibbard each added one goal before the half. Jennings scored one of her four first half goals before the halftime horn sounded and the Golden Eagles had a one goal advantage after 30 minutes of action.
Cortland netted five consecutive goals in a span of less than eight minutes midway through the second half to take command of the contest. Their final goal of the stretch came with 15:34 to go in the contest and it gave the Red Dragons a three goal lead, 13-10.
Brockport goalie
Morgan Elmer stopped six shots on the day. Cortland's Paige Potter added 11 saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Red Dragons.
Courtney Cunningham posted a team-high three ground balls and added one assist, while Hemly,
Erin Wegrzyn and
Margaret Smith each posted two ground balls on the day. Cunningham also added four draw controls.
