Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's soccer team is on the road this Saturday for a non-conference battle with Houghton College. The match is set to begin at 1 pm.
Last Time Out: Brockport opened the 2021 season at home against Nazareth earlier in the week. After 90 minutes the score was tied at 1-1, pushing the contest to overtime. With neither team finding the back of the net in either overtime period, the match resulted in a draw. Brockport and Nazareth start the new year with a record of 0-0-1.
Clutch Goal: The Green and Gold trailed the visiting Golden Flyers 1-0 heading into the 85
th minute of this past Wednesday's match. The home team was rewarded a free kick just outside the box as the end of regulation drew near.
Sydnee Smith stepped to the ball and delivered the equalizer in an incredible manner. Her shot went past the keepers outstretched hands, going bar down, to tie the game up with just minutes left in the game.
In Net: Despite allowing one goal to be scored in the tie with Nazareth,
Kayla Usborne was rock solid in her goalkeeper role to start the year. The junior finished with 10 saves, including five in the second half and two during overtime. Nazareth had the edge over Brockport with 22 shots and six corner kick opportunities, but Usborne's effort in goal kept her team in the game.
Looking at Houghton: The Highlanders started the season off strong with a 3-0 victory over Alfred State on the road. Saturday's matchup with Brockport will be their home opener for this fall. Houghton got contributions from several players, as all three goals from the win were scored by different players. Between the two goalkeepers who stood in net, they combined for four saves in the shutout win over Alfred State.
Previous Meeting: The last time these two squads faced off was during the 2019 season when Houghton came to Brockport. The Green and Gold defended its home field with a 2-0 triumph over the Highlanders.
Kiley Longin and
Camryn Pettit were the two goal scorers for the home team, with
Sydnee Smith earning credit for an assist.
