Men's Soccer Set to Start SUNYAC Play

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team (4-1-1) will resume play on the road this weekend after a 10 day hiatus for the beginning of SUNYAC Competition. The team will travel to take on SUNY New Paltz (5-2) Friday, September 24th at 4 pm, before heading to Oneonta (4-0-1) Saturday for a 1 pm start.
 
Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles are currently on a five game undefeated streak having won four of its last five games. In the last matchup against Houghton, it saw the Green and Gold defeat the Highlanders 3-2. Against Houghton, Josh Fitzpatrick was the leading goal scorer for Brockport, managing to find the back of the net twice in the game. Houghton would narrow the Golden Eagles lead to one as a goal by Brice Bogna got the Highlanders on the scoreboard. With Brockport ahead 2-1, around the 76th minute of the game, Colby Egan would give Bport a little bit of insurance, scoring a goal from an assist by Hunter Kassel to make the score 3-1. Houghton would find the back of the net with six minutes remaining in the game which would ultimately be the final goal of the contest to give Brockport the 3-2 victory and make them undefeated on the road.
 
National News: Heading into last weekend, the team was ranked in the top 10 in three different statistics categories across all NCAA division III men's soccer programs. In individual statistics, having recorded seven goals to his name, Matthew Stefaniw was ranked 2nd in the nation in total goals scored. In team statistics, the team currently sits in third place nationally in shot accuracy having put 52 shots on goal in 76 attempts, while also tied for fourth place in the Nation in fewest fouls per game.
 
Entering Conference Play: in 2018, The Golden Eagles managed to make it to the conference championship and win it all giving head coach Gary LaPietra his second SUNYAC Title. A lot has changed since that season as now co-captains Matthew Stefaniw and Zach Langelotti had just stepped foot onto the Brockport campus, along with Alex Fusani and Ben Kinslow. Now a graduate student, Noah Mohamed was playing in his second season for Brockport back in 2018. When asked about his team entering SUNYAC play and its opponents, Coach Lapietra had to say
 
"The team is excited entering this weekend's SUNYAC games, we have been working extremely hard for the intense competition that's ahead of us. It will be quite a challenge playing (5) straight conference road games against excellent Teams. We have a very young group so it's critical that we cut down on our unforced errors and take care of the ball while under pressure. The players are confident and can't wait to get back to playing high-level soccer in one of the toughest conferences in the country"
 
Keeping the Streak Alive: Since 2002, the Golden Eagles have never been defeated by the Hawks holding an overall record of 13-0-1 against SUNY New Paltz. In its last matchup against the Hawks in 2019, Brockport managed to record to win in shutout fashion defeating New Paltz 1-0. The men in the Green and Gold out played the Hawks as Brockport outshot them 14-10 while also picking up three more corner kicks (8-5) and two fewer fouls (7-9) over its opponent.
 
Keeping Eyes on the Hawks: New Paltz is currently 5-2 this season as it saw the teams most recent game come as a 3-0 shutout over King's College. Kenneth Roby is the Hawks leading goal scorer so far this season having recorded six goals in seven games. Phillip Varner who is the team's second leading goal scorer with two goals, is also the team's leader in assists with four. On total, eight different players have score for the Hawks as they're outscoring their opponents 13-3 to begin the season. In goal for the Hawks this year has been Marc DePasquale who's played in all seven games for New Paltz and managed to earn himself .43 goals against average.
 
Last Time Out: Against Oneonta, the team is coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Red Dragons. In a duel between the two teams last time out, Bport managed to even the game up late in the second half to send it into overtime before the Green and Gold were able to score the golden goal just under 13 minutes into the additional time to give the Golden Eagles the win.
 
Looking at the Red Dragons: Oneonta is 4-0-1 to begin the season undefeated outscoring its opponents 10-4. Leading the charge for the Red Dragons is Lucas Fecci who is the team's points leader with eight having recorded three goals and two assists to start of the season. Alex Sippos is tied with Fecci for most goals on the team at three a piece while Matt Howe is tied with Fecci for most assists this season. Nate Hanna has played in goal for Oneonta all season as he's recorded .96 goals against average in five games
 
Following the busy weekend the Golden Eagles will continue there five game road series with its next game against SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, October 2nd at 4 pm.
