Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team will hit the road on Friday for a big SUNYAC weekend. It faces Cortland at 6 pm on Friday before heading to Oswego for a 1 pm match on Saturday.
Messiah Tournament Recap: The Golden Eagles record is now 9-4 overall after going 1-2 last weekend at the Messiah College Tournament down in Grantham, PA. They started the event with a 3-0 sweep against the University of Mary Washington on day one. The next day Brockport lost 3-0 to the host school, Messiah College. To close out the weekend the squad faced #12 Juniata College, falling to the nationally ranked team 3-0.
Away from Home: With two road matches this weekend and another away trip against St. John Fisher on October 5
th, Brockport is in the middle of a seven-match span away from home. Currently owning a 0-3 mark on the road, the squad aims to get back on track before its next home match. The Green and Gold don't play at home again until a matchup with Potsdam on Friday, October 8
th.
Top Attackers: Andrea Coyle and
Meaghan Mastro lead the squad in kills this season. Coyle is tops on the team and ranks fourth in the conference with 129 kills. Mastro is right behind her, ranking fifth in the SUNYAC with 119 kills so far. Coyle's 3.23 kills per set is third in the conference, while
Megan Loomis is fifth averaging 2.93 kills per set. Loomis is third on the team with 85 total kills.
Setting the Table: With 280 assists on the season,
Kerri McHale leads the team and is currently fourth in the SUNYAC. She is recording 6.51 assists per set which also ranks fourth in the conference.
Ashley Allen has also proven herself to be a top ten setter in the SUNYAC with 155 assists and a mark of 4.08 assists per set.
Just Keep Digging: Currently ranked fourth as well in the conference,
Madalyn Bowen has worked for 203 digs on the season. Averaging 4.61 digs per set, Brockport's libero is third in that statistical category. Bowen has played in just two matches this fall in which she didn't finish with at least ten digs.
Cortland Matchup: The Red Dragons are 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC heading into Friday's matchup. They are riding the momentum of a six-match winning streak after defeating Buffalo State and Fredonia last weekend. Hannah Southcott and Nicole Van Pelt are ranked first and second respectively in the SUNYAC with 177 and 168 kills. Brockport defeated Cortland in 2019, 3-1, on the road to make it six straight wins over its conference opponent.
Oswego Matchup: Oswego enters the weekend 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The Lakers will take on Geneseo on Friday before hosting Brockport on Saturday. They have lost three straight matches after falling to Fredonia and Buffalo State last weekend. In 2019 Oswego took the Green and Gold to five sets before Brockport secured the 3-2 win.
Looking Ahead: The Golden Eagles are back on the court Tuesday, October 5
th when they take on St. John Fisher. This non-conference match will be played on the road, starting at 7 pm.
