Men's Basketball Hangs on for Close Win at Home

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team squeaked out a win at home over Cortland, 59-58. Brockport gets back in the win column after two straight losses, improving to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC.

Freshman Mekhi Beckett was an efficient 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-5 from deep as he led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Beckett also grabbed seven rebounds in the contest. David Grady III finished with 14 points and six boards, while Jahidi Wallace tallied 13 points and eight boards.

The game was tight from start to finish, as the score was tied at 14-14 after the first six minutes of action. The Green and Gold eventually took a six-point lead, but back-to-back 3-point shots from Cortland tied the score up at 22-22. A quick pair of shots from long range to close the half secured a 29-25 edge for Brockport at the halftime break.

Each team continued to answer any runs had by the opponent, with the score tied once again at 43-43 with 12:24 left in the second half. Trading baskets back-and-forth, the SUNYAC rivals remained tied as the contest approached the final five minutes of regulation. The visiting Red Dragons hit a big three with 4:16 left on the clock to take a 58-57 lead. However, that would be the last basket that Brockport gave up and a layup by David Grady III put the team in the lead at 59-58. Cortland had three shots in the final minute to take the lead, but Brockport escaped with the one-point win at home.

Two Cortland players notched a double-double, as the Red Dragons drop to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Austin Grunder led the team with 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Kareem Lubin finished with 15 points and 12 boards in the game.

The Golden Eagles are back in action this weekend with a trip to New Paltz on Friday. They are set to tip-off at 4 pm.
