Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team celebrated Homecoming in an exciting way, defeating the nationally-ranked #16 Oneonta Red Dragons 2-0. Brockport remains undefeated at 6-0 in SUNYAC play and improves to 8-1-4 overall after its sixth consecutive win.
Saturday's win for the Golden Eagles in conference play was enough to clinch a SUNYAC Tournament berth. They are the first team in the conference to lock up a spot in the postseason, with just three regular season matches remaining.
The opening half of play was competitive despite both teams going scoreless after 45 minutes. Each team had four shots in the first half, but Brockport held the edge with three corner kicks compared to zero from Oneonta.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to earn four more corner kick chances. At the 53:30 mark in the match,
Max Voyer and
Alex Rivara linked up to cash in on one of those opportunities. Rivara sent the ball into the box from the corner and Voyer put his head on the ball for the first score of the game.
Holding onto a 1-0 lead over Oneonta, the Green and Gold looked for the insurance score to put the game away. In the 71
st minute, Brockport found the back of the net to create a 2-0 lead.
Alex Rivara forced Oneonta's backline to lose possession, which turned into a transition opportunity.
Matthew Stefaniw led the charge and had a shot turned away, but
Giovanni Cardona was there for the rebound to finish off the play with his first score of the year.
The visiting Red Dragons had a few chances down the stretch, but goalkeeper
Andrew Taylor was up for the challenge. Taylor finished the match with five saves in a full 90-minute effort in net. He records his seventh clean sheet of the season, which ranks first in the SUNYAC. Brockport claims its sixth win in a row and clinches a playoff spot with the 2-0 victory.
The Golden Eagles are back in action next week with two more SUNYAC matchups on the road. They take on Geneseo on Wednesday, October 12
th at 7pm and then go to New Paltz for a 1pm start on Saturday, October 15
th.
