Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team is at home on Saturday, November 19
th for a matchup against William Smith College. Tip-off is set for 2pm at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Season Opener: The Golden Eagles opened up the 2022-23 season at home with a win over Medaille, 53-48. After trailing by one after the first quarter, they exploded in the second to outscore Medaille, 22-8, in the period. Brockport's defense and effort on the boards was vital to holding off the comeback attempt by the Mavericks. The squad allowed just five points to be score in the final six minutes of the game to start out the year 1-0.
Double-Double Effort: Shannon Blankenship had a memorable start to her sophomore campaign, posting the first double-double of her collegiate career. The second-year guard tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds, setting career-high marks for both. Blankenship also chipped in with two assists, one steal, and a block.
Getting Buckets: Last year's leading scorer,
Anna Felice, remains the top scorer for the Golden Eagles to start this season. She put up a team-high 15 points against Medaille to lead the way. Felice was 5-for-12 from the field, 2-for-7 from downtown, and hit 3-of-4 at the charity stripe.
Shannon Blankenship also hit double-digits with 10 points in the game.
Zairea Hannah scored eight in her Brockport debut and
Zoe Zutes added seven points.
Crashing the Boards: Brockport dominated the glass against the visiting Mavericks in the season opener. With 65 rebounds compared to just 40 from Medaille, the Green and Gold already surpassed the highest single-game rebound total from last year. It was a full team effort on the boards, as six different players grabbed at least five rebounds. In her first game at Brockport,
Zairea Hannah led the team with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Shannon Blankenship had 10 boards, while
Zoe Zutes and
Anna Felice each had seven.
Protecting the Rim: The interior defense against Medaille was solid, as the Golden Eagles finished the game with eight blocked shots. This matched the team's highest single-game blocks total from all of last season in just the first game of the year.
Zoe Zutes led the effort with a game-high three blocks, while teammate
Juan Brown sent back two shots in the win.
Looking at the Herons: The William Smith Herons enter this weekend's bout 0-1 so far this season. They fell on the road in the season opener, 66-57, to the Fredonia Blue Devils. #22 Lauren DeVaney and #25 Brooke Jarvis both hit double digits in the scoring column, combining for 33 points in the loss. The team shared the ball around for 16 assists on 22 made field goals, but also committed 20 turnovers in the process. Brockport won the last meeting between the two programs, earning the 66-61 win on the road last year.
