Cortland, NY – The Golden Eagles upset nationally-ranked #14 and top-seeded Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals in dramatic fashion. Defeating the Red Dragons, 3-2, Brockport heads back to the SUNYAC Championship for the first time since winning it all in 2018.
Matthew Stefaniw would provide the heroics in the final moments of regulation. Tied, 2-2, in the 90
th minute, Stefaniw buried the game-winner with just 17 seconds left on the clock to send Brockport to the conference championship game.
Warren Banks played the ball to his teammate in the attacking zone. Stefaniw was able to strike the ball off the post in the bottom left corner and to the back of the net to win the match. Brockport's leading scorer now has three goals and an assist during this postseason run.
After missing out on the action in the Golden Eagles' first-round matchup against Geneseo,
Seamus Parker came back in a big way in the semifinals. The senior scored two goals against the top-seeded Red Dragons to lead the way.
Parker came out ready from the opening whistle, putting the Green and Gold up 1-0 just 6:43 into the match. He was assisted by
Kolbi Maddy and
Matthew Stefaniw on the score. Then down, 2-1, in the second half of play, Seamus scored the equalizer in the 73
rd minute for the unassisted goal.
The pair of goals setup the go-ahead score by Stefaniw in the final minute for the win.
Andrew Taylor faced a total of 22 shots in the contest, coming up with nine saves and allowing two goals.
After giving up an early goal, Cortland would remain down 1-0 at halftime. The nationally-ranked Red Dragons would score a quick goal to tie the score up at 1-1 in the second half. Cade Denlinger was assisted by Marco Cottone. At 69:02 into the match, Mateo Marra scored Cortland's second goal.
Now that Brockport has passed through the first round and semifinals, the squad prepares for another chance at a SUNYAC Championship. The program has 11 SUNYAC Titles, most recently coming in 2018.
The 2018 conference championship team defeated Plattsburgh, New Paltz, and eventually Cortland in the tournament to earn the trophy. Grinding out two nail-biter victories through the first two postseason games, the Golden Eagles begin to prepare for a road trip to Oneonta.
The SUNYAC Championship will be hosted by No. 2 Oneonta, after it beat Plattsburgh, 2-0, in the other semifinal match. It will be a rematch from earlier in the season, which saw Brockport defeat the Red Dragons, 2-0, at home.
In that previous meeting the Green and Gold had two second half goals after the two teams went scoreless through 45 minutes.
Max Voyer got on the board first with an assist from
Alex Rivara. Later in the half Giovanni Cardonna scored from an assist by
Matthew Stefaniw to seal the win. At the time of the match Oneonta was ranked 16
th in the nation, meaning Brockport now has two wins over top 25 opponents.
The SUNYAC Championship match between No. 4 Brockport and No. 2 Oneonta is set to be played in Oneonta on Red Dragon Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm on Saturday, November 5
th. Both teams will battle for a conference title and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
