Fredonia, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference after pulling out a, 60-59, win over Fredonia on the road. Brockport took a 1-point lead late in regulation and kept Fredonia scoreless the rest of the way for the victory.
David Grady III was a problem down low for the Blue Devils in this one, as Brockport outscored the opponent, 42-22, in the paint. The forward finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. DGIII has now blocked three or more shots in five of the team's eight games this season.
Mekhi Beckett matched Grady's scoring output with 16 points in the game. Beckett was 3-for-7 from beyond the arc for the night. He continues the strong start to his sophomore campaign, leading the Green and Gold with an average of 18.8 points a game.
Jahidi Wallace added 12 points, doing some damage with a 6-for-9 effort at the foul line.
Colby Jordan chipped in all over with eight points, four boards, and four assists.
Tony Arnold led the team with five assists on the night.
Brockport had good looks offensively early in the contest, earning an 11-5 lead less than three minutes in. Fredonia's 3-point shooting in the first half turned the game around quickly, as the team went 6-for-8 from deep in the first.
The Blue Devils eventually led, 33-26, with just under two minutes until halftime. However, they would score just two points in the last four minutes of the opening half. This allowed the Golden Eagles to cut into the deficit, heading into halftime trailing, 33-30.
Down by just two early on in the second half,
Mekhi Beckett found a rhythm with 11 straight points for the Green and Gold. Fredonia responded to maintain a single digit lead near the halfway point of the second. With around five minutes left to play,
David Grady III scored back-to-back baskets at the rim to give Brockport a 3-point lead.
As crunch time approached, the Golden Eagles held a 59-54 lead over their SUNYAC opponent. A shot from long range and a pair of free throws from the Blue Devils tied the score up at 59-59 with 2:36 on the clock. Moments later
Jahidi Wallace split a pair of free throws to put Brockport back on top with a 1-point lead. That narrow edge was all the team needed, holding on for the 60-59 victory.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road Friday night for a non-conference game. They take on the Morrisville State Mustangs for a 6pm tip-off on December 9
th.
