Fort Myers, FL – Brockport Softball split its two games at the Lee County Sports Complex on day four of action. Brockport mercy ruled UMPI, 14-3, in game one before falling to Western Connecticut State, 3-0, in game two.
Game 1 – Brockport 14, University of Maine, Presque Isle 3
Madison Evarts and
Hannah Jacobs were both flawless at the plate against UMPI. Evarts was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Jacobs went 3-for-3 with two doubles and knocked in three RBIs.
Kellie Gentile's bat was hot as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Molly Ryan connected for two doubles in a 2-for-4 day at the dish, scoring two runs and bringing one home as well.
Jenna Downey was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and teammate
Emma DeJesus tallied two RBIs with her successful pinch-hitting opportunity.
Roseland Stroh (2-0) pitched the full five inning game for the Green and Gold. She gave up just two hits, two earned runs, and struck out four batters in the win.
With an RBI double in the bottom of the first,
Emily Willis-Nersinger put Brockport on the board first to take an early 1-0 lead. UMPI would grind out three runs in the second inning to snag a 3-1 advantage, but that would be its only run production of the game.
Roseland Stroh and the fielders behind her did not allow any more runs to score for the rest of the contest.
Hannah Jacobs cut into the deficit with an RBI single to left in the second, which got the Golden Eagles going on offense. The momentum continued to grow in the third with three more runs, as they went up 5-3.
Molly Ryan,
Kellie Gentile, and
Hannah Jacobs all registered RBIs in the third.
Brockport blew the game open in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Just about the entire lineup got in on the action in the inning, as the team brought in nine runs to reach the 14-3 final. The game-clinching rally in the fourth included RBIs from
Jackie DuTot,
Cameryn Duggan,
Kellie Gentile,
Jenna Downey,
Hannah Jacobs, and
Emma DeJesus. The game ended in the fifth as the mercy rule was put into effect.
Game 2 – Brockport 0, Western Connecticut State 3
Emily Willis-Nersinger was 1-for-2 at the plate and drew one walk in a contest.
Morgan Skpowski was walked once as well by the opposing pitcher.
Hannah Jacobs was 1-for-3, recording the second of Brockport's two hits.
Julia Palopoli (0-1) threw for 5.1 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two batters. None of the runs scored on her watch were earned runs and she didn't allow an official hit until the sixth inning.
Fiona Gibiser entered to pitch in the sixth, striking out one of the two batters she faced to get out of the inning.
The game was scoreless through the first three and a half innings.
Hannah Jacobs singled in the top of the fourth for the first hit of the game from either team in this pitcher's duel. West Conn. Was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the fourth after one of Brockport's five fielding errors.
After another scoreless frame in the fifth,
Emily Willis-Nersinger led off the top of six with a single up the middle looking to spark the offense. However, any ball put in play seemed to always find one of the Western Connecticut fielders to halt any chance for a rally. West Conn. had its only two hits, paired with a couple Brockport errors, in the bottom of the sixth to create the 3-0 final.
The Golden Eagles now stand at 5-3 overall after a 1-1 effort on the day. They continue tomorrow with another doubleheader at the Lee County Sports Complex. Alfred State is up first for a 9 am matchup and then an 11 am meeting with the University of Wisconsin-Superior is on the docket.
