Fort Myers, FL – The SUNY Brockport softball team finished the day on both sides of a pair of one-run games on day five of the action in Florida. After a tough, 11-10, loss to Alfred State, the squad put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win over UWS.
Game 1 – Brockport 10, Alfred State 11
Amanda Blakely had an amazing game at the plate in the first match of the doubleheader. She went 4-for-4, had four RBIs, four runs scored, and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.
Emma DeJesus and
Olivia Hayden were both effective in the top two spots in the lineup. They both finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Amanda O'Connor had a strong showing as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Fiona Gibiser got the start at pitcher for the Golden Eagles. The freshman struck out six in five innings of action in just her second career start.
Megan Van Dorn (0-1) stepped into the circle to finish the game off, recording one strikeout in two innings pitched.
Alfred State got going early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After coming up empty on offense in the first two frames, Brockport got hot with six runs combined in the third and fourth to go up 6-2.
Amanda Blakely rattled off a base-clearing double in the fourth, bringing in three runs.
The Pioneers responded with three more runs in the fifth to make it just a one-run game heading into inning number six. The Green and Gold created a little more space on the scoreboard in the sixth with a pair of runs to go up 8-5. In the bottom of the seventh, an inside the park home run helped Alfred State send the game into extra innings.
Brockport added two more runs in the top of the eighth, going up 10-8.
Amanda Blakely and
Emma DeJesus both brought a runner home to put the team back in the lead. The Pioneers had an answer in the bottom of the eighth with a two RBI single to tie the score at 10-10. Alfred State then brought in the game-winning run for the, 11-10, walk-off victory.
Game 2 – Brockport 4, University of Wisconsin-Superior
Emily Willis-Nersinger went 1-for-4 and knocked in the winning run that resulted in Brockport's walk-off victory in the second game of the day.
Olivia Hayden scored the game-winning run, while going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Madison Evarts batted 1-for-3 with one RBI. After sparking the squad's rally in the bottom of seven with an RBI, she narrowly beat a throw at home plate to tie the score up at 3-3 moments later.
Cameryn Duggan was responsible for bringing Evarts in to score, finishing 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Hali Jenner (2-1) was fantastic in just her second collegiate start in the circle and received the winning decision. She threw her first career complete game, going the full seven innings. Jenner allowed just one earned run to score, had one strikeout, and did not walk a single UWS batter.
The game started as a stalemate, with both pitchers throwing three scoreless innings to begin the contest. The University of Wisconsin-Superior finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to go up 2-0.
Olivia Hayden got the Golden Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Hayden beat out a throw to first base for an infield single which brought
Emma DeJesus in to score.
UWS homered in the top of the seventh, increasing its lead to 3-1 with Brockport getting last at-bat.
Catherine Johnson reached first on an error to provide the first baserunner in the bottom of the seventh. In a pinch-hitting opportunity,
Annie Dipirro drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
Madison Evarts then brought the pinch-runner,
Amanda O'Connor, in to score which made it a 3-2 game. With two outs,
Olivia Hayden got on base to put runners on first and second once again.
Cameryn Duggan stepped into the box next, hitting a clutch RBI single to tie the score at 3-3.
After
Amanda Blakely walked to load the bases,
Emily Willis-Nersinger made contact to create a fielding error by the UWS second baseman. She brought Hayden in to score the game-winning run on the play to complete the comeback for Brockport's 4-3 win.
The Golden Eagles are now 6-4 on the young season after going 1-1 in a pair of hard-fought games on Wednesday. Thursday marks their final day down in the sunshine state, with two more games on the schedule. Brockport faces SUNY Canton at 9 am and then matches up with Central College at 11 am.
