Golden Eagles Go 1-1, Defeat Canton on Final Day in Florida

Fort Myers, FL – On the team's final day competing down in Florida at the Gene Cusic Classic, the SUNY Brockport softball team went 1-1. Brockport defeated SUNY Canton, 5-1, in the first game before falling to Central College, 8-4.
 
Game 1 – Brockport 5, SUNY Canton 1
 
Emily Willis-Nersinger knocked in two RBIs on a 2-for-3 day at the dish for the Golden Eagles. Madison Ross also had two RBIs in the game, batting 1-for-3. Annie Dipirro went 1-for-3 at the plate, brought one run in to score, and touched home plate twice herself.
 
Olivia Hayden scored one run and connected for one hit in her four plate appearances. Hannah Jacobs came around to score once, getting on base three times by way of a walk. Madison Evarts drew one walk herself and scored a run in the contest.
 
Julia Palopoli (1-1) struck out a career-high eight batters, earning the win in the circle. She went the full seven innings, allowing just one unearned run to score on the day.
 
Annie Dipirro got the action started for Brockport with an RBI in the second inning that allowed Hannah Jacobs to score. Emily Willis-Nersinger then stepped up to the plate, connecting for a two RBI single up the middle. Madison Ross also had an RBI single to cap off a four-run rally in the second.
 
Trailing 4-0 heading into the fifth inning, SUNY Canton would prevent the shutout with an unearned run. Brockport led SUNY Canton, 4-1, going into the sixth. Madison Ross would record her second RBI of the game, scoring Annie Dipirro, to add to the lead. Julia Palopoli would get two of her career-high eight strikeouts in the seventh, as the Golden Eagles pulled out the 5-1 win.
 
Game 2 – Brockport 4, Central College 8
 
Cameryn Duggan finished 2-for-4 at the plate and had a team-high two RBIs in the second game of Thursday's double-header. Amanda Blakely got on base four times, hitting 2-for-2 with a double and drawing two walks.
 
Emily Willis-Nersinger doubled while going 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Annie Dipirro rattled off one hit in four at-bats, bringing in one run to score in the loss.
 
Freshman Hali Jenner (2-2) threw the full six innings in the circle. She struck out two batters and received the loss in the game two start.
 
Central College jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Brockport would answer in the top of the third, as Cameryn Duggan tied the score at 2-2 with a two-RBI single up the middle. Annie Dipirro would also register an RBI-single in the inning, as the squad went up 3-2.
 
The Dutch came back in the bottom of the third with three more runs to go up 5-3. After holding Brockport without a run in the top of the fourth, they added two more runs to their total to hold a 7-3 lead.
 
Emily Willis-Nersinger hit an RBI double in the fifth which brought Amanda Blakely in to score, as the Golden Eagles fought to stay in the game. However, they were unable to reach home plate again the rest of the way while Central College scored once more. The Dutch held off Brockport in the final two at-bats, sealing the 8-4 win.
 
The Golden Eagles wrap-up their trip to Fort Myers, FL with a record of 7-5 overall. They now head back up north and begin to prepare for their home opener against Nazareth. Brockport takes on Naz on the home field for a non-conference double-header, starting at 3 pm on Wednesday, March 30th.
