Historical Win Streak Comes to an End, Baseball Splits Doubleheader at #6 Cortland

Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team had its 16-game win streak snapped on Friday after splitting a pair of games against No. 6 Cortland. The Red Dragons took game one, 15-2, before Brockport bounced back for a 3-1 win in game two.

Game 1 – Brockport 2, Cortland 15

Ryan Mansell was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and one run scored. James Houlahan also touched home plate once, while batting 2-for-3. Tom Kretzler went 1-for-3 and had two RBIs in the contest. Nicholas Pastore and Brian Tietjen both had one hit in three tries in game one.

Andrew Huffman (5-1) got the start on the mound, throwing for 3.1 innings with two strikeouts. Adam Douglas entered in relief in the fourth, completing two full innings of work. Matthew Denatale, Jake Jempty, Michael Heilig, and Brian Doherty all stepped to the rubber to help finish out the game.

Huffman kept Cortland scoreless through the first two innings, but the third and fourth innings changed the game. Cortland scored eight runs to open the game up with an 8-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Brockport got on the board in the sixth thanks to a two-RBI single from Kretzler, but the Red Dragons remained in control. They added seven more runs to their total, taking the 15-2 win to start the doubleheader.

Game 2 – Brockport 3, Cortland 1

Tom Kretzler (4-1) became the hero in the second game with his work on the mound and a clutch hit late. He pitched seven innings, allowed one run, and struck out two batters. Matthew Colucci was credited with a save in this one. Tied at 1-1 in extra innings, Kreztler connected for a two-RBI double to put Brockport up 3-1.

Ryan Voight went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and one RBI for the Green and Gold. Ryan Mansell also rattled off a double in the contest, batting 1-for-3 with one run scored. Zach Eldred also went 1-for-3 in the final game of the set. Justin Pangburn and James Houlahan each came around to touch home plate once.

The pitchers and fielders played their roles well throughout the game, as neither team scored a run through the first six innings. Finally, in the top of the seventh the Golden Eagles struck first with Voight's RBI double.

Needing a run in the bottom of seven, Cortland answered with a run to send the game to extras. With runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth, Tom Kretzler's double knocked in two runs, which led the 3-1 win for Brockport.

After the Golden Eagles split with No. 6 Cortland on Friday, they enter the third game of the series 19-3 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. Cortland loses its first conference bout of the season, moving to 20-7 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. The final game of this matchup will be played tomorrow back down in Cortland, NY.
