OSWEGO, NY – The #22 SUNY Brockport Baseball team defeated the Plattsburgh Cardinals in the first game of Day 2 of the 2022 SUNYAC Tournament by a score of 12-3. The Golden Eagles will now move on to play the #11 Oswego State Lakers at 5:00 pm with the winner advancing to play SUNY Cortland tomorrow in the final series of the tournament.
Highlights: James Houlahan had a big day against Plattsburgh going 4-for-5 scoring two runs while driving in a run against the Cardinals.
Ryan Mansell recorded three hits in five at-bats while scoring a run too.
Matt O'Dair came in Clutch for Brockport when he drove in a team-high five RBIs in two hits including a triple while scoring a run himself. Rookie Catcher
Jason Mansell went 2-for-5 with a clutch at-bat that allowed him to bring two runners across the plate on a double.
Brian Tietjen recorded two hits while
Tom Kretzler managed a hit and RBI as well.
In total, all of Brockport's starting lineup including pinch hitter
Ryan Voight recorded runs in the game along with a 13
th career triple from
Nicholas Pastore. Pastore also was able to steal a team-high three stolen bases against the Cardinals.
On the Mound: Tom Kretzler (7-2) pitched his fifth complete game of the season while throwing a total of 120 pitches. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in the game while only allowing three runs to cross the plate.
Scoring Summary: Plattsburgh got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before an RBI base hit from Kretzler in the bottom half of the inning tied the game back at 1-1 apiece.
Plattsburgh would then score a run in both the third and fourth inning to pull ahead 3-1. From the bottom of the fourth inning, Brockport would rally back down by two runs to pull ahead 5-3. Brockport's big fourth hitting came thanks to clutch hits from
Jason Mansell,
Matt O'Dair, and
James Houlahan to push Brockport ahead as each recorded RBIs.
From the fourth inning on Brockport scored two runs in the seventh and then a big five-run inning in the eighth inning from Brockport allowed the Golden Eagles to capture a 12-3 win.
Moving On: With a win over Plattsburgh Brockport will now go on to play Oswego State with the winner advancing to tomorrow's championship series against SUNY Cortland.
