PLATTSBURGH, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team defeated the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in game 1 of the weekend series on Friday afternoon by a score of 10-0.
Single Season K's Record: With seven strikeouts through 7 innings of scoreless work on the mound
Andrew Huffman (8-2) managed to strike out a total of seven batters in the game-breaking the school's record for most strikeouts in a single season. With 83 strikeouts, Huffman broke the previous record of 79 strikeouts in a single season which was set by Kyle Smith in 2011.
Batting Reports: Ryan Mansell went 3-4 in Friday's game as he recorded two base hits and a double with 2 RBIs while being credited with a stolen base.
James Houlahan finished the day 2-5 as he drove in two runs.
Nicholas Pastore recorded one hit in the game for a bases-clearing triple to drive in three RBIs. He now increases his triples record to eight this season and 12 over the course of his career.
Justin Pangburn went 2-4 at the dish as the shortstop drove in two RBIs while scoring two runs of his own.
On the Mound: With eight wins this season,
Andrew Huffman is just one win away from tying the school's record of most wins in a single season which was set by Ben Kimball (2004) and James Bardanette (2012) whom each recorded nine wins in a single-season on the mound. Huffman threw yet another scoreless gem as he did not allow a run to score through seven-innings of work while striking out a total of seven batters. Through 60.1 innings pitched this season, Huffman now holds a 1.94 ERA, the second-lowest in the conference behind teammate
Tom Kretzler.
Ryley O'Connell then came into pitch in the eighth innings where he retired the side and struck out one batter along the way.
Keegan Jarvais then entered in the ninth to shut down Plattsburgh's dream of a 10-run ninth-inning and ended the game to record the Golden Eagles' seventh shutout of the season. With seven shutouts the Golden Eagles are now tied for the fourth most shutouts in Division III this season.
Scoring Recap: James Houlahan helped Brockport get on the board first with an RBI single to centerfield in the third inning to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
The Golden Eagles would then increase their lead to 4-0 following RBI singles from
Matt O'Dair, Houlahan, and
Ryan Mansell in the fourth inning to put Brockport up 4-0.
In the fifth
Justin Pangburn singled to drive in
Brian Tietjen and
Zach Eldred before
Ryan Mansell would earn an RBI on a bases-loaded hit by a pitch to allow O'Dair to cross home plate. Pastore would then clear the bases with a three-RBI triple to make it 10-0 at the end of the fifth as no team would score another run for the rest of the game.
What's Next: Brockport will go back at it against Plattsburgh tomorrow evening for a doubleheader with the first game set to start at 12:00pm.
With Oswego, Cortland, and Brockport all winning games on Friday Oswego will have to win at least one game on Saturday to secure home-field advantage for the SUNYAC Tournament.
If Oswego loses both games on Saturday and Cortland can sweep New Paltz then Cortland will host the SUNYAC Tournament.
If Brockport wants any chance of earning the No. 2 seed in this year's playoffs, New Paltz will have to sweep Cortland in tomorrow's doubleheader game with Brockport needing to sweep Plattsburgh tomorrow.
