Baseball Splits with Plattsburgh in Final Doubleheader of the Regular Season

PLATTSBURGH, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team split the final two games of this weekend's SUNYAC series against Plattsburgh State. The Golden Eagles defeated the Cardinals 1-0 Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 14-9 in the final game of the regular season against Plattsburgh.
 
Ryan Mansell finished the day with a combined 4-9 as the senior left fielder recorded a double, scored two runs, and drove in an RBI. On Saturday, Brian Tietjen went 4-8 with two doubles and one run.
 
After recording three hits and scoring a run in game two, Tom Kretzler inches closer to breaking more school records. with 192 career hits, he's five hits shy of breaking the career record for hits (196), with 148 RBIs is two RBIs away from breaking the all-time RBI record (149), and is four runs away from scoring the most runs in a single season (43). While hitting a triple Saturday, Kretzler surpassed the previous all-time triples record of 9 in a career that was broken earlier in the season by Nicholas Pastore who now has 12 career triples.
 
Pastore went 3-5 in game two Saturday where he drove in two RBIs, scored one run, and record a double
 
Kretzler (7-2) recorded his seventh win of the season as he threw his third complete-game shutout this year against Plattsburgh in a complete pitching battle between the Golden Eagles and Cardinals in game 1. Kretzler only gave up three hits while striking out a total of nine batters.
 
In Game 1, the only run scored throughout the whole entire game came from freshman catcher Jason Mansell who hit an RBI single to centerfield which was able to score sophomore first basemen, Brian Tietjen, in the second inning of the game.
 
In Game 2, Brockport took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Plattsburgh would answer with four runs through the first three innings. Brockport would fight back and get its deficit back to one run In the top of the third inning making it a 4-3 game before Plattsburgh would score 10 runs between the third and fifth innings to pull Plattsburgh ahead 14-3. Despite being down 11 runs, the Golden Eagles did not give up and would try to make a comeback as the team rallied to score four runs in the sixth and one in the eighth but weren't able to come back completely as Plattsburgh took the final regular-season game of the season from Brockport, 14-9.
 
The Golden Eagle will now prepare for the SUNYAC Tournament which will be held in Oswego, NY from Thursday, May 12th to Saturday, May 14th. Brockport will enter the double-elimination tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 SUNY Cortland on Thursday.
