Brockport Falls Short Against Geneseo in SUNYAC Semifinals

Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team fell to Geneseo on Friday, 12-8, in the SUNYAC Semifinals. Geneseo advances to face Cortland in the finals on Saturday, while Brockport is eliminated from the postseason.

It was a hard-fought game from start to finish, as the teams were tied after one. The Knights won the second quarter to take a three-score lead into halftime. Brockport cut into the deficit in the third, but Geneseo was able to hold off the Green and Gold in the fourth for the four-goal win.

Logan Hibbard finished with a team-high four points in the game and led the squad with six draw controls. She scored all three of her goals in the third quarter, had one assist, and grabbed two groundballs.

Claire Odett was 2-for-4 on free position opportunities, scoring two goals for the Golden Eagles. They also received two scores from Danielle Hemly, who went 2-for-2 on free position shots. Alayna Foos got on the board as well with one score.

Defenders Emma Smith and Erin Wegrzyn both caused a turnover for Brockport on the back lines. Courtney Cunningham and Alexandria VanDerKar combined for five groundballs and eight draw controls. Senior goalie Morgan Elmer came up with 13 saves on the day and scooped up three groundballs.

As the action began, it was Brockport that drew first blood thanks to Danielle Hemly's first score of the game. Alayna Foos also scored in the opening period, but Geneseo would answer both scores to make it a 2-2 game after one.

The No. 2 seeded Geneseo Knights would control the second quarter, seizing all the momentum. They would win the quarter, 4-1, to earn a 6-3 lead at the half. Brockport's one score in the second came from Claire Odett off of a free position shot.

Down by three going into the start of the second half, Logan Hibbard provided the Golden Eagles a much-needed spark. The sophomore scored three unassisted goals in the third quarter, as Brockport closed the gap to make the score read 7-6. A late score from Geneseo gave the Knights a two-score advantage going into the fourth.

Geneseo created a comfortable cushion on the scoreboard with three straight goals to start the fourth. Down by five with less than seven minutes to play, Odett and Hemly both scored clutch goals to keep Brockport in it. However, Geneseo's solid play and insurance goal in the final minute sealed the game at 12-8.

The #25 nationally ranked Golden Eagles will not receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championships this year. At 11-6 overall and 7-2 in SUNYAC play, they now await the at-large bid selections for a chance to continue on in the postseason.
