Rochester, NY – SUNY Brockport bounces back on the road with a 23-3 win over the University of Rochester on Saturday, September 17
th.
Brockport held the leading rusher in the nation to just 64 yards on the ground, and forced two turnovers.
Raylens Boutin snagged his first interception of the season.
Aidan Thomas provided a huge hit on the quarterback to force a fumble that
Andre Marianetti came away with.
Offensively,
Rashad Law broke the century mark on the ground for the first time in his career at Brockport. Law finished with 109 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. The team outgained Rochester on the ground, 177-113, in the 20-point victory.
Head Coach
Jason Mangone is now 18-8 in bounce back games and remains without back-to-back losses since 2015. Brockport jumps above .500 with a win heading into the bye week.
Coming into the game, Rochester was averaging 371.5 rushing yards a game and its running back Daniel Papantonis was leading the country with 293.5 yards a game. Brockport's top-notch defense kept U of R to just 113 yards rushing, including only 64 yards from Papantonis on 19 carries.
Ben Robinson led the team with eight total tackles on defense.
Ben Marshall stepped up to make six solo tackles, as he and
John DeRidder both got in on seven stops. Up front
Jordan Harris made six tackles which included a stop in the backfield.
In the secondary,
Raylens Boutin had a strong outing with five solo tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup.
Giovanni Frisenda had five total tackles and was joined by
Enzo Lattanzio with one pass breakup.
Todd Simonds completed 13 of his 20 pass attempts for 108 yards and one touchdown. He connected with
Jared Maurino for a 1-yard touchdown pass. Simonds also ran for 32 yards and a touchdown, while Maurino racked up four catches for 17 yards.
Anthony Testa and
Derrick Chance both caught three passes in the game. Testa finished with 44 yards receiving and Chance had 21 yards.
Dan Giangrasso had an impressive day on the punt unit. He booted his longest punt of the season with a 56-yarder, helping him finish with four punts for 181 yards. He had two punts of 50 yards or more, one touchback, and pinned Rochester inside the 20 twice.
The Golden Eagle defense held one of the top rushing teams in the nation to just 14 yards on the ground in the opening quarter. The offense racked up 119 yards and got into field goal range late in the quarter.
Noah Panepinto put Brockport on the board in the first quarter with a 25-yard field goal. With his first of the season, the squad entered the second with a 3-0 lead.
Less than two minutes into the second quarter,
Todd Simonds scored on a 7-yard rushing touchdown to cap off a 9-play, 80-yard drive. Panepinto would miss the point after attempt, but Brockport's lead would grow to 9-0. Rochester would be stopped at the goal line on their next drive, settling for a file goal to make it a 9-3 game.
Brockport closed the half with another touchdown after a 12-play, 74-yard drive in 6:06.
Todd Simonds linked up with
Jared Maurino on a goal line pass for a 1-yard touchdown catch, Maurino's second of the year. On the road, the Golden Eagles entered halftime with a 16-3 lead over the Yellowjackets.
Early on in the third quarter both defenses did their parts to keep either offense from gaining any momentum. With eight and a half minutes on the clock, Brockport's Preseason All-American
Raylens Boutin came up with an interception. With great field position, the offense handed it off to
Rashad Law four plays in a row for 37 yards and a touchdown. Law's second rushing score of the season gave the team a 23-3 lead, following Panepinto's successful extra point.
At the start of the fourth quarter the University of Rochester was threatening inside the redzone after putting a solid drive together. Brockport halted the drive on a fourth and long situation to keep the Yellowjackets out of the endzone. The next time U of R had the ball,
Aidan Thomas took it away with a huge sack that forced a fumble.
Andre Marianetti picked up the loose ball and brought the Brockport offense back out.
The Golden Eagles lined up behind the big offensive front and began to run out the clock late in the contest. They did have one more scoring opportunity, however Panepinto missed from 36-yards out. Brockport kept the Yellowjackets from getting anything going offensively down the stretch to put the game away. Rochester drops to 1-2 while Brockport improves to 2-1.
Next week is the bye week for the Green and Gold, getting the weekend off from games. However, the squad returns home the following week in a big way. The Golden Eagles will host St. John Fisher in the annual Courage Bowl game on Saturday, October 1
st. This game will be played under the lights at Bob Boozer Field, starting at 6pm.
