Men's Soccer Earns Big Win in its ALS Awareness Game

BROCKPORT, NY –  The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team hosted it's first ALS Awareness Game Saturday evening where they defeated the Potsdam Bears in the team's largest margin of victory of the season 3-1.

ALS Awareness Game: The Golden Eagles hosted the awareness game to support the ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter as well as Joseph LaPietra, brother of Head Coach Gary LaPietra.  Joseph is currently battling ALS, an illness commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Donations to Joseph LaPietra's GoFundMe campaign can still be made here: https://gofund.me/337a45c8. Donations can also be made to the ALS Foundation here: https://www.als.org/.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Prior to the contest, the Golden Eagles also hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their newest turf facility which is home to the men's and women's soccer and lacrosse teams as well as the field hockey program.

Scoring Recap: Matthew Stefaniw got hot in today's contest scoring his first multi-goal game of the season. His two goals helped tie the game up early on at 1-1. Max Voyer scored the game-winning goal for Brockport midway through the second half on an assist from Warren Banks to make it a 2-1 match. Stefaniw second goal of the match put things away however as it gave Brockport the 3-1 lead with just over four minutes remaining to play.

Team Stats: The Golden Eagles outshot Potsdam all game outshooting the Bears 28-10. Brockport managed to get 11 shots on goal while the Bears were only on target two times all match. The Green and Gold received 10 corner kicks to Potsdam's four while also receiving fewer fouls than Potsdam as Brockport earned 12 fouls to Potsdam's 13. Six yellow cards were handed out during the match with an even split of three cards to each side.

Shot Leaders: Stefaniw lead the team with nine shots, five being on net as he came off the bench only spending 39:00-minutes on the pitch. Russ Domm tallied six shots on net, two being on goal. Max Voyer's go-ahead goal was the only shot of his four that was on net but found a way to make it count.

Keeper of the Goal: In net, Andrew Taylor made one save in the game spending all 90:00-minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles.

What's Next: The Golden Eagles are now 2-0 in conference play and have as many conference wins this season as they did last season. They will look to improve to 3-0 in the SUNYAC when they play Buffalo State on the road, Wednesday, September 28th at 4:00 pm.
