Plattsburgh, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team got back in the win column Friday night by defeating Plattsburgh, 70-68, on the road. Brockport is now 8-9 overall and back to .500 at 5-5 in the conference.
Zairea Hannah played the hero in this one, coming up with several big plays in the final minute. She tied the game up at 68-68 with 36 second left in regulation. That was followed up by back-to-back blocks defensively and the game-winning layup that beat the buzzer. Hannah also finished with a game-high 11 boards.
Anna Felice led the team in scoring with 19 points, shooting 6-for-10 including three makes from beyond the arc.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste also made three shots from deep on the way to 11 points.
Hali Lucia recorded a career-high 14 points in the contest. She went 4-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-4 from long range, and 4-for-4 at the line.
Juan Brown had eight points and eight rebounds in the contest.
The Golden Eagles had a big first half, starting with a 25-point effort in the first quarter.
Anna Felice went off for 12 of her 19 points in the opening period. Shooting the ball well from 3-point territory, Brockport held a 25-7 lead after one.
Brockport's 3-point shooting continued in the second with four more makes from downtown. The quarter belonged to
Hali Lucia, who scored 12 of her career-high 14 points in the second period.
Back-to-back 20-point quarters for the Green and Gold led to a comfortable lead at the break. Brockport entered halftime with a 22-point lead, 45-23, over Plattsburgh.
The Plattsburgh Cardinals would change the mood of the game in the second half. They put up 20 points in the third quarter in an effort to close the gap. Brockport still maintained its lead at, 58-43, going into the fourth.
Looking to make it interesting in the final period, Plattsburgh cut the deficit to single digits near the 6-minute mark. With 4:23 left to play, the Cardinals were able to make it a 60-56 score. The score would become tied at 66-66, with only two minutes remaining.
Plattsburgh would take its first lead of the game with 1:42 left on the clock, 68-66. A few possessions later,
Zairea Hannah flipped the switch. She scored with 36 seconds left to tie the game up at 68-68. Hannah then blocked two shots on defense, as Brockport got a much-needed stop. On the final play of the game, she was able to grab an offensive board and make the putback layup for the win.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to take on Potsdam at 2pm.
