Football Defeated by #16 Cortland in Empire 8 Championship

Cortland, NY - The Brockport football team fell to #16 ranked Cortland Red Dragons, 41-17, on Saturday in the Empire 8 Championship. Brockport's six-game win streak comes to an end, as the record moves to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Cortland claims a third consecutive Empire 8 Title, remaining undefeated at 6-0 in the conference with an 8-1 mark overall.
 
The Red Dragon's offense got on the board early, with Zac Boyes escaping for an 8-yard touchdown run to put Cortland up 7-0 in the first.
 
Jala Coad broke free for a 47-yard scamper on Brockport's opening drive, setting up Nate Wigent for a 36-yard field goal. Staying perfect on the season, Wigent cut the Cortland lead to 7-3.
 
Coad broke the century mark on the ground for the first time this season, totaling 120 yards on 17 carries. He would finish with an effective 7.1 yards per carry for the game.
 
The Golden Eagles defense stiffened up on the opposition's second drive, with Mike Talbert Jr. and Vincent Daviero combining to make a big 4th down stop.
 
Later in the quarter, Boyes connected with Cole Burgess for a 64-yard touchdown to put the Red Dragons ahead 14-3. Boyes would finish with 308 passing yards and 5 total touchdowns.
 
Despite a collection of Brockport turnovers in the first half, the Golden Eagles defense contained the Red Dragons to just three points on the next few drives. Cortland would add another TD before halftime, with Boyes finding Burgess for a 22-yard score. Burgess would end the contest with 245 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
 
The Golden Eagles special teams stopped the bleeding entering halftime with a block on Mike Baloga, keeping the score 24-3 at half. Vincent Daviero got his hand on the kick, registering his second block of the season. 
 
The Cortland offense would take advantage of a worn-down Golden Eagles defense, with Boyes throwing two more touchdown passes early in the third. He linked up with Burgress and JJ Laap, making it a 38-3 score.
 
The Golden Eagles offense would find the endzone in the third, as Chris McGuire connected with Brian Caldwell Jr. on fourth down to cut into the large deficit. Brockport entered the fourth quarter, trailing by 28 points.

In the fourth, special teams would come through again for Brockport. On the punt coverage, Louie Usera forced a fumble that Kyle Haettich scooped up  and ran back 27 yards for a touchdown. Another big special teams play made the score 38-17, with 8:29 left to play.
 
The Red Dragons would score the final points of the contest, with Baloga connecting for his second field goal of the game. With no other points added to the total for either team, Cortland took the win at home, 41-17.

Mike Talbert Jr. led all players with 11 total tackles, while Raylens Boutin and Ben Robinson chipped in with eight tackles each.
 
The Golden Eagles will return home to take on Alfred on Saturday, November 11th at 1 pm. It will be the final game of the regular season, as Brockport will honor and recognize this year's senior class on Senior Day.
