Brockport, NY – The Brockport men's basketball team fell to Morrisville State at home, 94-84, on Tuesday night for a second loss in a row. Brockport is now 5-3 overall on the season (1-1, SUNYAC) with a one month wait before the next game.
The visiting Mustangs were efficient from all over the court, as four players reached double figures. Shykell Brown led all scorers with 29 points, going 10-for-15 from the field and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore
Zachary Rice led the Golden Eagles in scoring, posting a career-high 17 points to go with seven boards and three assists. He shot 50% from the floor and 50% from long range in the contest (6-for-12 FG, 3-for-6 3PT).
Alex Tavarez continues to provide valuable minutes off the bench, hitting double-digits for his third straight outing. The freshman also had a new career-high with 14 points, while also chipping in with four boards, a pair of steals, and one block.
Nathaniel Gordon, another freshman, matched his teammates with a career-best scoring performance of his own. In just 11 minutes of work off the bench he notched 11 points and six boards.
Morrisville got off to a hot start offensively and was able to take a double-digit lead just five minutes into the game. By the 11:25 mark, the Mustangs held the advantage at 28-13 over the home squad.
A few stops turned into a series of layups for the Golden Eagles, which allowed them to cut the deficit to single digits as halftime approached. However, the opposing team responded with a big run to secure a halftime lead of 52-32.
In the second half, Morrisville's lead would grow to as much as 24 points with 16:07 remaining to play. Brockport started to get a rhythm from 3-point territory in the second, hitting seven long range attempts in the half.
The shooting from Brockport wasn't enough as the Mustangs improved upon its 50% shooting first half with a 53.57% showing from the floor in the second half. Although the Green and Gold finished strong to make it a 10-point game at the end, Morrisville led from start to finish for the non-conference win.
Both teams went 8-for-21 from long range on the night and shot 50% or better in the second half. However the free throw disparity on the stat sheet proved to make a big difference. Morrisville went 22-for-28 at the charity stripe, while Brockport ended the game at 8-for-14.
The Golden Eagles now have plenty of time to regroup and prepare for their next game, which isn't until Friday, January 5
th. They will travel to resume SUNYAC play for a 7:30pm tip-off against No. 6 Oswego State.
