Oswego, NY – The Golden Eagles came up short in their pursuit for a SUNYAC Championship, falling to Oswego, 74-63, in the conference finals on Saturday. The top-seeded Lakers have now won back-to-back SUNYAC Titles.
Following the game, both
Jahidi Wallace and
Mekhi Beckett were announced as members of the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.
Wallace posted his second straight double-double, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. He went 7-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 from deep, and 5-for-6 at the foul line. Beckett added 15 points of his own and five boards in the championship game.
Tony Arnold chipped in with 11 points, nine boards, and a career-high seven steals. Starters
Colby Jordan and
David Grady III combined for 14 points in the contest.
Brockport got on the board first to start the game, but Oswego quickly went up 10-4 early on. By the 13:01 mark on the clock, the Lakers had extended the lead to double-digits at 18-7. The Golden Eagles struggled with turning the ball over, as they fell behind by 14 points halfway through the first.
Mekhi Beckett spared a nice run for the squad, as the team cut the deficit to just eight points with less than five minutes before halftime. However, the nationally-ranked Oswego squad responded with a run to recreate its comfortable lead. Brockport entered the break down, 46-33.
The double-digit lead would remain for the early stages of the second half. Down, 57-45, the Golden Eagles began to chip away. At 10:16 on the clock,
Tony Arnold nailed a big 3-pointer, making it just a 6-point lead for Oswego. Despite the team's best efforts, this was as close Brockport would get.
The top-seeded Lakers quickly pushed the lead back up to double-digits just moments later. They allowed Brockport to stick around until the dagger jump shot was made by Jeremiah Sparks in the final minute. Oswego nailed a few free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Oswego State claimed the win, 74-63, and the SUNYAC Championship to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles finish the season as the SUNYAC runners-up with a 20-7 record overall and 14-4 in conference play.
