Golden Eagles Come Up Short During Saturday's Set of Games

Naples, FL – Brockport was back at North Collier Park for its second day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday. The softball team is now 1-3 after losing to John Jay, 11-10, and Western Connecticut State, 6-1.

Brockport 10, John Jay 11 – Game 1

The first four batters in the Golden Eagle lineup had an outstanding showing at the plate in the first game of the day. Riley Barrett, Olivia Hayden, Jodie Burdick, and Kellie Gentile all connected for two hits.

Barrett finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Making her first appearance of the season, Hayden was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Burdick and Gentile were both 2-for-3 with two RBIs each.

Emma DeJesus and Amanda Blakely held it down on the bottom of the lineup. They both went 2-for-4 at the dish with one run scored, while Blakely added an RBI of her own.

Caitlyn Dailey also registered an RBI, going 1-for-3 in the contest. Victoria Angelo got in on the action with one hit in four at-bats, scoring one run for the Green and Gold.

Pitcher Fiona Gibiser (L, 1-1) received the losing decision as the Brockport starter in the circle. The sophomore threw a complete game going the full 7.0 innings for the first time in her collegiate career.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first, thanks to an RBI single from Burdick in the first inning. John Jay responded with five runs in the second to go up 5-1. Blakely added one more to the team's total with her RBI single in the second.

Leading, 6-2, after three innings, John Jay would soon face a rally from the Green and Gold in the fourth. Olivia Hayden sparked a 2-out rally with a single up the middle that scored two runs. Kellie Gentile would bring Hayden home to score, to go along with two more scores in the inning that put the team up, 7-6.

The Bloodhounds tied the score up at 7-7 in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI triple, but the score wouldn't remain tied for long. Burdick, Gentile, and Dailey all hit RBI singles in the sixth, giving the Golden Eagles a 10-7 lead going into the seventh.

In need of a rally, John Jay got exactly that in the top half of the final inning. A double with the bases loaded brought three runs in to score, which set up the go-ahead run to score on an RBI single soon after.

Brockport was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, coming up short after a back-and -forth battle with the Bloodhounds.

Brockport 1, West Conn St. – Game 2

In the second game of Saturday's set, the top of the lineup was active once again at the plate. Riley Barrett was 3-for-4, Erin Dougherty went 2-for-4, and Jodie Burdick batted 2-for-4 in the 1-2-3 spots.

Annie Dipirro got involved with a 1-for-3 effort at the dish, while Hannah Jacobs followed suit going 1-for-3. Caitlyn Dailey registered the team's lone RBI in the contest, helping Burdick come home to score.

Freshman Laina Beer (L, 0-1) made the first start of her collegiate career on the day. Beer threw 5.0 innings for the Green and Gold with three strikeouts, receiving the losing decision. Roseland Stroh pitched 1.0 innings in relief to close out the game in the circle.

The Wolves from Western Connecticut State had a big third inning to take control of what was a scoreless game. They scored four runs in the bottom half of the third, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. In the fifth, they added one two more runs to hold a six-run advantage on the scoreboard.

With the bases loaded, Dailey drew a walk to get credit for an RBI that scored Burdick to prevent the shutout. Brockport entered the seventh inning trailing, 6-1. Neither team would touch home plate in the final frame, resulting in the win for West Conn. State.

After playing in the morning slate on Saturday, the Golden Eagles are back in action on Sunday for the afternoon set of games. They will take on Wilmington College at 1pm and Mitchell College at 3pm back at North Collier Regional Park.
